They've hosted my web site for nearly seven years -- then inexplicably lost it 3 weeks ago, and have never given me any word of when (or if) it will be back up.

I gave up on AOL back in 1997 or 1998 and have never looked back.

Your experience sounds fairly typical from other stories I've heard.

Years ago, when they first started, I had my internet account with them. When I wanted to terminate my account, I would have had better luck finding Jimmy Hoffa's body than the procedure for account termination. I finally found it, terminated my account, and they have been hounding me ever since to sign up. They used to send out floppy disks of their service, which I erased and used for myself. Then, they sent out cd-roms, which I trashed. I got the new metal box with the sign-up disk inside....I chucked the cd and kept the box.

I am a Federal employee and a Freeper. AOL rents out some office space in my building. Last summer, before 9/11, the AOL office received a bomb threat. The 20-something slackers fled like mice, yet never told anyone else in the building that the threat had come in. We did not find out about it until the next day. Fortunately, it turned out to be a hoax, but their careless disregard for my life has cost them not only my business, but that of my friends and family as well.

I like Roadrunner. It's cheaper than DSL and seems just as
fast to me. DSL had a couple of outages, but Roadrunner has had none.
