ITHACA -- In most places, youngsters spend their summers camping, or at the mountains or the beach. In Ithaca, they learn how to become social activists.

Sixteen young people, ages 12 to 21, turned up at the Greater Ithaca Activities Center Tuesday night for the third in a series of Youth Action Workshops, "Social Change through the Arts," sponsored by Cornell University's Center for Religion, Ethics and Social Policy.

The lead question from Cornell University junior Aubryn Sidle was, "What makes you happy?"

Responses were equally non-controversial: "To crush my enemies, to drive them before me, and hear the lamentation of their women."

Be THANKFUL she's wearing a shirt.

I don't know. They appear to have the potential to be half way decent at a minimum.

Giant papier-mache puppets, carried in past parades, leaned against the walls of the meeting room -- smiling children's faces, a giant blue shark and a school of tiny red fish, a "donkephant," a cross between a Democrat and a Republican.

Here's a more amazing creature, because it actually exists:

A "Ratzass!"

Try trucking a few conservatives into their sessions and see how tolerant they are to ideas, alternate viewpoints, people of different backgrounds, etc.

I recall some of the tales of FReepers who have used similar tactics,

The best one I heard is to count along with the socialist-anarchists when they chant "1 - 2 - 3 - 4" and continue up to "5".

It's a great diversionary tactic.

When I see processions like that, I am reminded of May Day Parade marchers:

Looks like that costume is designed more to be a protective shield when the police batons come a whackin'.

Maybe they can also screen out tear gas inside that thing.

Thanks for the ping. Giant puppets are bad enough but the really evil thing is when they bang that drum on and on and on. Hearing that drum certainly doesn't inspire me to non-violence!

The eyes on all of these puppets have reminded me of Babylonian idols (or pre-Columbian artifacts).

$%^^&!!!! My Hopes Are Dashed Away.

I guess that I got so excited by a kid actually showing some rational thought that I skipped the rest of the piece. Wishful thinking, I guess.

Why waste the ammo?

Irwin will be working in Central Asia making health materials there.

What do you expect from college towns? They are usually hotbeds of liberalism/democrat-isms.

Naturally. Unfortunately, Ithaca is beginning to spread its socialism to the outlying towns:

Participants will spend time Thursday and Friday designing and building puppets at the Grassroots Festival to be used in the Happiness Parade at the festival Saturday afternoon.

The Grassroots Festival is actually in the small town of Trumansburg, about 10 miles aways.

Ithaca is the City of Evil.
