Man arrested for burning kitten on grill July 16, 2002 Posted: 4:03 PM EDT (2003 GMT)

A neighborhood friend of Sherry Scott holds the kitten they named 'Lucky,' in a recent handout photo.

LIBERTY, Missouri (AP) -- A man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly burning a kitten on a barbecue grill as several other people stood around and watched in amusement.

A witness pulled the scorched, 7-week-old tabby from the hot coals, but it was severely injured and had to be put to death, police said.

"They kept saying, `Meow, meow,' and they were poking at it with a stick," said Sherry Scott, who burned her hand grabbing the kitten.

Charles C. Benoit, 24, was charged with animal abuse, punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine. He was jailed on $10,000 bail.

Jim Roberts, spokesman for the Clay County prosecutor's office, said he does not expect anyone else to be charged, because no witnesses could identify the others.

Scott said that on Friday night, she saw 10 or 12 people at the barbecue grill in the courtyard of the apartment complex where she lives. Scott said she asked what they were cooking, and they said it was a cat. She said the group taunted her, daring her to rescue the cat.

She said the group scattered when she threatened to call police. She said she pulled the kitten from where it had been shoved into the coals at the back of the grill. Its tail, whiskers, fur, eyes and throat were scorched.

"I called him Lucky because I thought I got him out of there just in time," she said.

Scott said she and other residents stayed up Friday night trying to nurse the kitten with an eye dropper of milk. But animal control officers decided that because of its respiratory injuries and inability to swallow food, it had to be destroyed.

"If you would have seen him, you would have cried," said Sheri Simpson, one of the residents who helped care for the kitten.

"They've been unable to effectively separate the abstract (the story) from reality."

They are angry. They can't get past their rage. Rational thought is not possible.

And trying to interject any other discussion (other than let's torture this perp) makes you a target for their anger as well.

"Rob stated that as long as it was animals and not people, the perp should remain free and not be punished."

Yes Rob stated he should not be punished by the law. Rob also stated in other words his friends are free to shun this guy (as punishment).

We state that it is not a matter of the law. We stated in several posts, we don't approve of what he did. But you ignore this, and you attack us, as if we support what he did.

You, SIR, have a SERIOUS PROBLEM with the "Nature of Sentience!"

If a "Creature" can interact with humans in such a fashion that it can help it's Human "Family" avoid Calamity, or avoid physical risk, that "Creature" CANNOT be regarded as a "Biological Automaton!"

SOMEWHERE in the "Assessment" of this "Creature" one MUST accept that the "Creature" acted to protect NOT ONLY Itself, but also it's Human family!

A Pretty sophisticated thought process for a "Meat Automaton,"--hhhhmmmmnnn???

We are WAY BEHIND the "Power Curve" in understanding WHO are the "non-sentient Food Creatures," & Who "we can Eat!!"

I agree that you can't put animals on the same legal or moral level as humans, that is simply common sense.

But at the same time, I am sorry for those who see all animals as simply "walking, souless meat" or mere property. The joy I have recieved from owning and living with cats is a pleasure I would be sorry to have missed in life. I don't think this would be possible with a non-emotional outlook on animals.

I have dispatched suffering animals, including a pet of my own. I am not a sob-sister. There are good ethical and practical reasons for laws against cruelty to animals. One does not need to be ruled solely by emotion to believe this.

I have "rescued" animals from bad situations. I have killed animals that I wanted for food. There is a time and place for everything, and a blanket PETA attitude that all animals are equal to humans is just as annoying as the idea that all animals are just things, and we should have a right to do with them as we will, as long as they are our lawful property.

It is not that complicated, really. Animals are not on an equal footing with us, but they are God's creatures, and that means they should not be abused nor idolized.

Why is The One Kitten such a big deal?

It isn't about this kitten. Today it is this kitten. Tomorrow it will be some other example of cruelty committed by people. I grieve them because I love mine and consider animals to be absolutely innocent. That is the benefit animals have in not being human. They always have my sympathy, where humans can blow it.

We are being jerked around... First, by the reporter who printed it. Why is the reporter wrong? - Because it is a freaky occurance, not a news story, and all of us would be better off if we did not know about it at all. I grant you that. This is no different than the national media jerking us around with stories and photos of children abducted on the other side of the country. Tragedies that we can do nothing about but gape in horror at the thought, and wait for the inevitable news of a small battered body found in a swamp.

They all can't break my heart. Not all the kittens and puppies, and not all murdered children. Our collective hearts should not be yanked around like this... I do not have enough blood in me to bleed for every tragedy. I grant you that.

Then we get yanked around by the poster who put it here, knowing that it will inspire a toxic collision between us softies that are horrifed, and those that think being horrified over the suffering of an animal makes you a liberal and an animal rights freak. They say ugly things just to set everyone else off, and away we go on the thread just like a thousand times before. Most people who have a tortured kitten thrown in front of them would find it sad. If you don't agree, then have the courtesy to leave people alone that do. There is no good conservative cause to be argued over a tortured kitten. This one is for the heart.

I often avoid these threads because I hate being reminded of the evil blackness in people, both the perpetrators in the article, who I am helpless to attack, and in the posters who say callous things... Those, I can fire back at. And sometimes I do when the posters piss me off with their callousness.

and back to your grandma, she forgot that she had 30 years to deal with the incident. You had a few minutes. For you to hear the story and feel nothing would be to not value its life at all... Doing the right thing to end it does not erase the sadness for the situation. The situation is still sad. My step-dad and I had to kill a cat that was hit by someone else and left wiggling in the road. Of course killing it was the right thing to do, but it left me sad. Less sad now than then. That is what time does. Time is in the mind... for you, it had just happened... 30 years had not passed.

You need to get educated on the crime statistics correlating animal abusers with torture and murder of children and adults. These sickos do NOT draw a line between humans and animals -- if it can suffer, they enjoy torturing it. The FBI and most major police departments routinely cross-check their databases between child abuse and animal abuse, because the perp matches are so common.
