LOL! I used to threaten to shellac my dog (just kidding, folks)! He sheds so much I've often said I could knit myself another dog from his fur!

LOL! And how! I use the vacuum cleaner, too. :) Just when you think you're done, there's more! During the winter, my husband and I "fight" over who gets the heater. :)

I've had dogs all my life, many different breeds and mutts, the pugs were the easiest to train and teach tricks.
Yes, they shed, but no worse than most other breeds, and they are the best foot/bed warmer in the winter...LOL

I wonder if that is court speak for, "we're working on a deal"? Any deal with Dick would probably only give the family a body to bury though. That, and knowing what happened to Liz.

Same here. I currently have a yorkie, shepherd, and dane. All ends of the spectrum. From my experience, they make a good team. If the yorkie starts up (and he does...frequently) it gets the other two excited. And there aren't too many intruders brave enough to go into and stay in a house with a dane or shepherd, much less both.

As for pugs, my neighbor across the street owns one. Definitely a good combination of friendly and alert. The shedding thing, like you say, is no worse than any other. My cat sheds more than the neighbor's pug.

I continue to hope that if he was involved, there were accomplices. There is enough evidence to lead me to believe it might not have been a one-man job.

Thanks for the info... I did not have two of the connections... it is impertive that every parent have a good written description of their child (children).. our grandchildren have a height tape in the laundry room, height and weight by dates.. I still can not believe that the Smarts did not have the alarm system on.. especially with the break-ins... another safety point, all bedroom doors should be open at night, someone could hear movement... of course, perhaps Elizabeth is a light sleeper.. which may account for the event... Given the crazy climate.. terrorist, home invasions etc... our relaxed, open door, welcome and trust everyone life style may have to change.. at our borders, in our criminal policies and in our own homes.. what a pity...

From what I understand, there were no break-ins at their home. Ricci took the items while working there. He broke into a neighbor's home, though. It was just one incident and it happened a year prior, so I can understand not having the alarm on in a house full of children. I personally would have had it on, but I can also see why he would opt not to.

Thanks.. for some reason I thought Ricci broke into the Smart house, but you are correct he "just" took some items while he worked there.. I have difficulty with the alarm system... usually when all of the children are in, the last chore at night is to turn off the TV/Radio/Lights and check the alarm... especially in an upscale neighborhood... was it usual for Smart not to set the alarm? Did Ricci know that? I am still trying to connect Ricci to this case... but deep in my heart, I believe he is just a petty/opportunistic (is that a word?) criminal... he could have been a participant in some role, but there is more to this than we know... When Elizabeth comes home and all of the documents are public..I would really like to see some of our usual posters get together and develop crediable policies and safety standards to prevent these events.. frankly, I believe that most of you are ahead of many of our advisors... cheers...betti

I'm not certain about whether or not they usually set the alarm. I would imagine not since Ed has stated the reason it wasn't on was because it kept going off for no reason or was falsly triggered by family roaming around at night(not sure which). Couldn't say whether Ricci knew it.

I completely agree with your idea, though. The best defense against this type of thing is knowledge and preparedness. If it helped even one child escape this kind of tragedy, I'd be more than willing to participate as I'm sure most on here would.

Any recommendations on what is a nice little doggie to get?

My recommendations would be an Alaskan Eskimo (sometimes called a Sptiz) and then a Sheltie in that order. The Alaskan Eskimo is a small dog, very beautiful - all white except for a black nose, about the size of a pomeranian. I've had two and they are very smart, obedient, affectionate, quick on their feet and are excellent watch dogs. I mentioned the "quick on their feet" because one of mine was once loose with an Australian Dingel on a camping trip and I feared mine would be killed. He couldn't catch her. Also, mine never missed an unusual sound or the opening of a door.

I would have also taken a Sheltie if the opportunity had presented itself. They are very, very good with kids. They look like a Collie pup, but never get any larger.

Maybe they feel that Ricci was/is uninvolved, but my have sufficient contacts on the wrong side of the law, to find out something if he were to try?

A little something about Shelties, they have no brain. We have had 2 of them (I don't know why). They can bark a warning & have lots of hair, but no brain.

It is my understanding that Ricci has worked not only in the Smart home, but in other homes in the neighborhood, as well. Not all of his knowledge or contacts are from the wrong side of the law. Just something to consider.

Believe it or not, a pekingese is one of the most ferocious little watch dogs there is. Another good protector is a fox terrier. I won't go into the stories why, but I know from personal experience. But if I were getting a dog that could be both an alert dog AND a guard dog for a child, I think I'd choose a shepherd. They are extremely loyal and will defend in a heart beat.

I have a St Bernard now, and she alerts me when there's somebody outside (I live in an apt) - but I really doubt she'd defend me. St Bernards are too much of a "people" dog, I think. And don't even talk about hair! Yuck. She is without a doubt the sweetest dog I ever had, but I'd never get another one because of the hair.

My best friend was a Great Dane. They are sooo funny.

Anyway, glad you're thinking of getting a dog. Good decision!

Here's some sites you can research in order to make your decision as to which breed you prefer ..

http://www.animalnetwork.com/dogs/profiles/profileview.asp?RecordNo=179 (Rat Terrier info, but they don't fully emphasize how good of a guard dog this breed is. Once they sink their teeth into an intruder, they REALLY hang on!)

http://www.germanshepherds.com/thegsd/history/ (font is hard to read, but good info)

http://www.puppydogweb.com/caninebreeds/pekingese.htm (this breed will also attack and bite intruders)

http://www.puppydogweb.com/caninebreeds/pugs.htm

http://www.dogbiz.com/list-of-links.htm

http://www.wonderpuppy.net/choose.htm

Finally, here's some info on the dogs most likely to bite:

http://www.dogbitelaw.com/PAGES/statistics.html

The dogs most likely to bite

The Centers for Disease Control study dog bite incidents, including the types of dogs most likely to bite. The breeds that the CDC considers highest risk are pit bulls, Rottweilers, German shepherds, huskies, Alaskan malamutes, Doberman pinschers, chows, Great Danes, St. Bernards and Akitas.

Owners of such dogs should be aware that if their dogs attack a person, the attacks may be scrutinized by law enforcement. The reason is that irresponsible behavior with or toward a dog whose breed is known to bite has caused a rising and unacceptable injury and death toll, which authorities are determined to stem.

My 14 year-old English Springer Spaniel has been buried in the back yard for a year, but she was the best! Always friendly, wonderful (I mean amazing) with kids, even toddlers. The only time I ever heard her bark was when strangers came to the door . . . and believe me, it was a LOUD bark. And if that's not reason enough, the Bush's always owned Springers as well (Remember Millie?)

That's incorrect, Ricci broke in to the Smart's home at night too.

They believe he was involved, said they have evidence we don't know about but it's not enough to convict him yet.

Thanks for your info... I had read the CDC's report on dogs that tend to bite...but as a long time dog lover and owner, it really is all in the training... if you tie a dog up, whip or beat him, teach aggressive behavior.. you will have a dog that can be easily provoked to attack... we have had Chows for over two decades.. never an aggressive one yet.. we also have had Danes.. (great personalities).. and Akitas.. we actually went to Germany to get our Pom.. he is a large pom, almost 18 pounds.. very sturdy and has a little bit of an attitude.. he, along with the Chow are from the Spiz family... so for anyone wanting to find just the right friend.. it is all up to your own personality and then the behavior is a reflection of your own and your training capacity... Cheers.. betti

The only Dane I ever knew to bite was one that was chained up and teased by kids. Those dogs are so loveable. I just can't imagine them and St Bernards being on that list! On the other hand, my son's MALE St Bernard is pretty aggressive, now that I think about it. I don't know anything about Poms. But chows - I'm terrified of them. The only dog I'm afraid of. I don't remember, but I must have had something happen when I was a small child. But it's like you said ... it all depends on the training the owners give. Even Pit Bulls can be sweethearts!
