Scientific American threatens AiG : Demands immediate removal of Web rebuttal
AIG ^ | 2002/07/11 | AIG

The prominent magazine Scientific American thought it had finally discredited its nemesis—creationism—with a feature article listing ‘15 Answers to Creationist Nonsense’ (July 2002). Supposedly these were the fifteen best arguments that evolutionists could use to discredit the Bible’s account of Creation. (National Geographic TV also devoted a lengthy report to the article.)

Within 72 hours, Dr Jonathan Sarfati—a resident scientist at Answers in Genesis–Australia—had written a comprehensive, point-by-point critique of the magazine article and posted it on this Web site.

So Scientific American thought it would try to silence AiG with the threat of a lawsuit.

In an e-mail to Dr Sarfati, Scientific American accused him and AiG of infringing their copyright by reproducing the text of their article and an illustration. They said they were prepared to ‘settle the matter amicably’ provided that AiG immediately remove Dr Sarfati’s article from its Web site.

AiG’s international copyright attorney, however, informed Scientific American that their accusations are groundless and that AiG would not be removing the article. Dr Sarfati’s article had used an illustration of a bacterial flagellum, but it was drawn by an AiG artist years ago. AiG had also used the text of SA’s article, but in a way that is permissible under ‘fair use’ of copyrighted materials for public commentary. (AiG presented the text of the SA article, with Dr Sarfati’s comments interspersed in a different color, to avoid any accusations of misquoting or misrepresenting the author.)

Why the heavy-handed tactics? If AiG’s responses were not valid, why would Scientific American even care whether they remained in the public arena? One can only presume that Scientific American (and National Geographic) had the ‘wind taken out of their sails.’ Dr Sarfati convincingly showed that they offered nothing new to the debate and they displayed a glaring ignorance of creationist arguments. Their legal maneuver appears to be an act of desperation. (AiG is still awaiting SA’s response to the decision not to pull the Web rebuttal.)

I can be proven wrong, the whole thing is that you have to bring me the facts that refute what I say. Scientifically provable facts, and I will be more then happy to admit that I was wrong.

But bringing me biblical myths and fables are not gonna do it.

I dind't know I was lacking wisdom teeth until I was in boot and everyone else was getting holes torn in their gums and bleeding all over their pillows.

Disappearing appendix? Surely a miracle!

Nah, I think the Doc just missed it, my mother had hers removed and it was so small that the doctor had a hard time finding it. She has a spastic colon, they thought it was appendisitis and opened her up. Wasn't the appendix of course, but they removed anyway, they were in there, might as well.

Shallow? at least I actually studied other religions and other peopels opinions on religion. What's your excuse? Some person told you that you would go to hell unless you beleived the way they did?

That's not what I would call open minded, nor intelligent. I call that desperate.

You can observe and repeat a test of evolution with a bacterial culture and a couple of antibiotics.

Mmmmm... don't think so. The bacteria are not actually evolving. The bacteria that survive have always had a natural immunity to the various antibiotics. There is a way that the bacteria "share" genetic information, i.e. drug resistance genes (don't ask me, I'm no microbiologist, I just know what I read and that is the way I understood it). Haven't you ever wondered why the infections you get at hospitals AFTER an operation are harder to get rid of? It is because the hospital is a closed environment where the bacteria can use this "sharing" in the small community of the hospital where an open wound is much more dangerous than at your own home.

The ones suceptable to penicillin and all the common antibiotics have been prettly much eliminated from western culture. If you go down to Honduras, cheap antibiotics still work very well for common infections.

Look who's talking... avoid/deny the facts of life? excuse me, I embrace knowledge, scientifically proven knowledge. That is reality.

Like I said, be what you want, just don't force your myths and fables on me.

P.S. Unfortunately, the drug resistant bacteria are becoming more common because of the use of antibiotics to get food animals to grow quicker.

If they have always had a natural immunity to antibiotice why then did the rest of the population not have the same immunity? They certainly have had pleanty of time to spread their genes around.

You are just unbelieveable, atypical arrogant condescending christian attitude, just as I have experienced with most fundamentalists. Be they Muslim, Christian, mormon, jehoho, whatever.

They are afraid of science and freedom because their religious beliefs may come into question. Too bad for you the inquisition is over, huh?
