Tribute To HEROES

.

If there's anything that identifies and personifies all military people, it's the dogtags.
It's one of the first things we get, and sometimes it's the last reminder of who we are.
They signify our unity of purpose and our dedication to our country.

The great intangible of America's wars beyond logistics,
beyond strategy, beyond wonder weapons and Generals,
is the spiritual force of its fighting men and women -
and that is the force that the USO so serves.

John Basilone Stamp Drive Petition

John Basilone won the Medal of Honor on Guadalcanal. He went home as part of a war bond drive but pushed to get back into combat. He died on Iwo Jima and was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross which is one down from the Medal of Honor. This petition is to have a stamp issued in his honor. Believe it or not - the sponsors are having a hard time with this effort and it has been going on for quite some time. Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley stamps take priority!

Please sign it on-line and pass the link.

Many Veterans have written to me, saying that the Canteen is like home to them for the first time since they served.

Snow Bunny, I have said it before, and will say it again, this site is a work of art and deserving of an award. The daily themes are incredible. The wonderful patriotic messages are heartwarming, encouraging, and educational. The message is loud and clear...."God Bless America and All Who Serve to Make her Strong and Free!"

Oh, what a Godsend this website would have been during our previous wars. I can only imagine what this would have meant to our service people in the Vietnam and Koren Wars, when even a small gesture of patriotism and support from the civilian sector would have been so very encouraging and appreciated.

I know that you did your part during the Vietnam years to lift our soldier's spirits and you are still continuing to do so with this Freeper USO Canteen. THANK YOU, SNOWBUNNY!!!!!!!!!! And thank you to all who contribute to make this the best Canteen in the world!!!! ..... and, no doubt, the most well-attended!

For his service to the Republic....

.....named USNS Shughart (T-AKR 295) in honor of Sergeant First Class Randall D. Shughart, United States Army. He was awarded a posthumous Medal of Honor for distinguishing himself by actions above and beyond the call of duty, while protecting the critically wounded crew of a downed helicopter in Somalia. On October 3, 1993, in the absence of sufficient forces, he and his team leader volunteered to fight through enemy fire to protect the men at the crash site. Armed only with a sniper rifle and pistol, Sergeant First Class Shughart continued to fell attackers until his ammunition ran out and he was fatally wounded. His actions saved the pilot's life.
