I know how much the military hated Clinton. The best thing that could happen to this country politically is a military coup as the officier corp is nearly all Republicans and we'd most likely end up with someone like Pinochet( a great man despite the leftist propaganda). I wonder if Gore got elected would the military accept it?

"I wonder if Gore got elected would the military accept it?"

As a former Army officer, I can tell you that sentiments like that do exist. However, one of the defining principles of our military is its subordination to civilian authority. That our military embraces this principle with a religious fervor is what has prevented us from degenerating into a banana republic military dictatorship. This includes the prohibition against speaking out publicly against elected politicians while serving on active duty.

And, while it may seem preferable given some of our previous presidents, it always turns out bad in the end. A military coup, however well intentioned, would have consequences for the Republic I do not care to contemplate.

If gore were elected, the military would let out a collective groan and then do its duty. As long as the commander-in-chief does nothing clearly in violation of the constitution with regard to his orders to the military, he will be obeyed. And that is the way it has to be.
