I don't remember if the police made a specific statement as to whether or not they think it's a hoax. I don't know what they think. I think they've had this for a while and probably discounted it. I think Ed released it because media interest is about to die, the police are providing nothing to keep media interested, and Ed knew no other way to stimulate interest now other than submitting to things the family has resisted to maintain their privacy, like giving out interviews of their kids or giving tours of their house.

They reported it leading into Brit Hume and again during the next hour intro, but I haven't heard it since. They said they expect to charge Ricci for burglary, theft and for something else that will be a surprise. Then they described an old Ricci girlfriend who had a 16 year old daughter at the time. Other FReepers heard it too, as there was some discussion of it earlier in this thread.

I think this is a big deal.

My only point is Nancy Grace tended to give the letter credibility because she couldn't imagine anyone in the nation would possibly do anything to take the focus off Ricci. Someone needs to give Nancy the shock of her life and show her this thread.

Maybe you could get the earlier Fox News reports too. I know that Shepard Smith had Ed Smart on his show. It sounds like Mr. Smart was telling his story differently everytime he was interviewed.

I know there was a direct conflict between Mr. Smart and the Fox reporter on the scene as to what Mr. Smart had said earlier about the police being told.

I agree. I think the reason for today's embarrassment of a "news flash" can be found in post #4 of this thread. I'm really surprised this letter is being discussed at all......unless it's just for the purpose of further embarrassing Ed Smart.

I haven't heard anything about Ricci's ex and her daughter, but in the last five minutes of Greta, Adam Housley said that one of the charges against Ricci will be bank robbery. I think that's the surprise as he said they were told not to report it until this evening.

Ed Smart was live on LKL and taped on Hannity or vice versa. I kept switching back and forth and on one show he said he believed the letter was from a woman and on the other show, he referred to the letter writer as "he". Fox News played clips of Ed Smart's press conf earlier in the day, where he said that he had conferred with the SLC police about the letter-but,Fox said that this was contradictory to what the police were saying this evening-they first heard of the letter during Ed Smart's press conference.Ed Smart may have been desperate to keep the attention focused on the case,but his behavior today was, to be charitable-very odd. He should have brought the letter to the police immediately-so they could check for fingerprints and DNA. His message was garbled and he was rambling-the details seemed to change with each tv appearance.

I don't think they necessarily talked about the inappropriateness and sexual assault in the same sentence. It was more like the police have been talking about a surprise charge and knew about the inappropriateness. I suspect that the "sexual assault" comment was speculation as to what the surprise charge was going to be.

VERY interesting. That was reported about the first day that Ricci's name was mentioned in the case and then never discussed again.

That should be enough to put him away for a very long time - as in life sentence, with all of his other baggage. That surely provides a starting point for negotiations in the Smart case, since bank robbery is a federal crime. An indictment will be a very clear message. The feds get a conviction 99% of the time, when they indict.

Looks like they're playing hardball with Dick and his lawyer. I guess Dick still isn't cooperating. His choice may be between going to prison on unrelated charges, and getting parole in a few years, or facing the death penalty. In that case, I don't think he has anything to gain by making a deal. Time will tell.

Speaking of bank robbery, this brings up a question I've had for a while. This Remington guy, who apparently sometimes hired Ricci to work for him, is pending bank robbery charges. When his name came up his attorney said he couldn't be involved with Elizabeth because he's been in jail for several months pending trial. However, I've read about Remington several more times and I haven't heard anyone say he's in jail since. Does anyone know if he's locked up or if this was just spin his attorney put out there that he got away with?
