Bush DID NOT say there was anything wrong with making a profit .. AS LONG AS IT IS DONE HONESTLY

I just don't like the linkage of profitability with dishonesty. I don't like the shadow of unsavoriness or illegality that is being cast across the private sector.

CEO is not a four letter word!

Rush needs to read before he gets on his tangents.

"At this moment America's greatest economic need is higher ethical standards, standards enforced by strict laws and upheld by responsible business leaders. The lure of heady profits of the late 1990s spawned abuses and excesses. With strict enforcement and higher ethical standards, we must usher in a new era of integrity in corporate America.

Makes me wonder what he really is upset about.

Executive orders are bad when Clinton issues them, but good when Bush issues them?

I hope you will read Dales' reply to you and respond. Mine would have been similar. EO's in and of themselves are not wrong or bad; it is how and why they are used. But I think you knew that (I hope)

Rush totally missed the point. Bush's references to the profits of the 90's luring corrupt execs to cook the books is to link theses scandels to the Clinton era where a stock market bubble tempted some to use Clintonian tactics, lying, to cooks the books and make more money. I heard yesterday that a recent poll said 51% would hold Clinton responsible for the scandels rather than Bush. C'mon Rush, you're usually more on the ball.

I did not say this was war profiteering. I said it was LIKE war profiteering.

All bankruptcies go through the courts, where their books are investigated. Nothing new about that. The difference is in getting pepople who cause the bankruptcy by cooking the books and also those who get themselves excessive bonuses and compensation as the company goes down the tubes.

Not all CEO's are evil. In fact most are honest, AS PRESIDENT BUSH SAID. But those who cause problems should be held accountable. Period.

If you don't cook the books then you have nothing to worry about

or do you cook your books and hence the reason you are so upset??

Accounting is a feeling one gets when you have to go to the bathroom and there is no toliet paper. You know you have to go but there is always a mess anyway you do it.

I would love for congress to make laws on accounting and have one standard of explainations of what Liabilites are and what are assets. It is time to drop the old British way of wording.

If accounting is a method how can there even be competition in the field?

"At this moment America's greatest economic need is higher ethical standards

But that is exactly my gripe. Higher ethical standards can never be an 'economic need'! It is a moral need, a spiritual need, a need of the nation's soul. The only 'economic need's is more capital and materials.

This smacks of 'America's greatest economic need is more governmental oversight and regulations'...

Have you seen the NEW MSNBC ad for Chris Matthews, et al, on FOX NEWS? I thought someone in my house changed channels on me. Since there are only two people and one dog I couldn't figure out who that was. LOL! It was STUPID looking and desperate, IMO.

Anyone who has the stomach to watch anything but Fox News has my regrets. I can't take it! The reporters and news anchors on Fox are SO MUCH more pleasant than the others. They actually SMILE.

In fact, the new promotions for Fox say exactly that. As Fox and Friends say, how can anyone be THAT serious so early in the morning. TRUE! I need to wake up and SMILE NOT be ANGRY the first thing in the morning. I have ALL DAY to accomplish that.

I turned Rush off over a decade ago. Anyone who advertises themselves as "always right" is wrong. Am I right? :)

Do you want the government deciding what is 'excessive'?

Should the government be an unseen seat on every corporate board?

You are nit-picking like Rush, looking for something to complain about.

"Where the heck are all the Bush detractors who have been saying he was opposed to these things he is doing? Why aren't they on this thread?"

They're busy regrouping. I've been (slowly) working my way through the comments on this thread....and I don't see them...YET.

They will come out in FORCE when the Senate blocks the president's proposed corperate reform legislation legislation to Congress. Come to think of it, the legislation to Congress seems to be months old....so the Senate is already blocking it.

Well, it seems to me if a company is going bankrupt then a CEO doesn't deserve a bonus at all.

Do you want the government deciding what is 'excessive'?

Yep .. you didn't listen to the speech

That is NOT what the President said ..

Again .. there is NOTHING wrong with making a profit .. there is NOTHING wrong with a bonus as long as the books aren't cooked and you are honest with your shareholders

Not making things retroactive is he? There are plenty of laws existing if they fully used them to the fullest extent...
