People would be amazed to know that many Germans served in the American Armed Forces in WW2. As a matter of fact, most of the soldiers in the US Armed Forces were German and British.

In his autobiography, America's leading World War One ace, Eddie Rickebacker, wrote that his family spoke German at home when he was a child and that he spoke English rather poorly when he started school. That resulted in a nickname of "Dutch" and many fights on the way to and from school.

Being of German descent myself, I know a boatload of these (including my grandfather); this while other Americans were giving them crap for being German. Our last name used to sound very German, we changed it in WWII to something that sounds Dutch, we've never changed it back.

Too bad with our current war on terror Islamic "Americans" don't have the same loyalty that German Americans did.
