The Bush administration has approved the first federally funded project using stem cells obtained from fetuses aborted up to eight weeks after conception, expanding the scientific promise of stem cell research and complicating the ethics debate that surrounds it.

I hope we can moderate the tone of this thread and keep it from being pulled. I really do want the information I asked about.

I have not made one editorial comment either way about the article on this thread. I've been called a "liar" and an "idiot" simply for posting a link to a front page article in today's Chicago Tribune.

Regards,

Um, the President only has veto power when a bill is presented to him for signature... Dane stated it was legislated and signed by Clinton in 1993...

There are 2 kinds of stem cells involved here

Thank you for helping refresh our memory. We are wasting way too much bandwidth here on political blows and parries, when we ought to be discussing social and ethical issues related to stem cell cloning and biology. The matter has every promise of being more important in the coming century than almost any other issue. What will become of the human race when every citizen in engineered rather than natural?

I know, you've done just what you should.

And I haven't fired any shots either.

I just want to know more.

I guess I'll wait a few hours, play Civilization with my kids, and check in to see if there are more facts to think about.

Best to you,

Richard F.

If said Demo law exists, it could be overturned by dinnertime. The Constitution gives the President veto power; the congress can't prevent that. So, either the law does not exist, or the administration does not want to overturn it

Uh the law was passed and signed in 1993 with a demo Congress and President. It was law when Bush took the reins of the Presidency in 2001.

The only way it can be overturned is if a bill passes Congress today 7/7/02 or in the future, which is very unlikely since dashole controls the reins of the Senate until the November elections.

Maybe something you should relfect about as you post your knee jerk replies..

Dane, if you read ANYTHING I wrote, you would know I am far more PRO-LIFE than Dubya.

For me, I can see the usefulness of such research, but I cannot condone killing the pre-born to conduct it! I have heard that there are adult stem-cells that could work even better.... why is it that we must have fetal cells, then? Maybe it IS part of the pubbiecrat agenda so that they can keep abortion as a FedGov issue instead of putting it back to the States, where it would be feasible to get it outlawed on a state by state basis.

The pubbiecrats do NOTHING to get Roe v Wade overturned, they just use it to further their own agendas.

Hey, it ain't MY fault there's not a lick of difference between the pubbies and the crats. Either live with it or MAKE a change... And you should notice as anyone WITH half a brain could, that I do NOT defend the Libertarians. I defend the Constitution, something far more important. Nor do I defend or condone drug use. What you put into your body is none of MY BUSINESS, nor is it the business of Gooberment, for which you should give MAJOR thanks. It is EQUALLY not gooberment's business to fund stem cell research, period. Private funding for private research would NOT entail using fetuses or embryonic cells, probably. That sort of research is primarily POLITICAL. Encouraged by the abortion lobby. And supported by politicians from BOTH branches of the ruling party. Sorry, dane, your frothings do not contribute much to the discussion, but they do reveal the lack of depth in what passes for your mind.

I am taking the position that he simply is living up to his promise last year not to allow the further execution of innocents for stem cell research. The life or death decision has already been made, period.

It will be a materialist's wet dream.

The fact is that we are hurdling toward eugenic practices that make Dr. Mengele look like Mr .Rodgers.

This garbage will only serve to further the reductionist mindset--no God/no human dignity/no compassion

1) Don't look now, but your knee jerk, reactionary politics are showing.

2) Regarding your post above. I don't want to do anything with your body, and neither does anyone else. The issue is women doing something to someone elses body.

Hey, it ain't MY fault there's not a lick of difference between the pubbies and the crats.

Ain't my fault that you suffer from politcal dyslexia either. If you can't see that the demos are the party of abortion even with people pointing out the facts to you(i.e the 1993 demos law in Congress), that's your intentional ignorance.

I won't argue that point. However, in most cases, either the husband or the parents (of a minor) should surely have some say in the matter. As an outsider, my opinions don't count to you. Would you rather keep abortion the way it is or have each State decide on the matter?

Honestly? I don't know.

This stem cell, baby farm issue has only gained prominence recently.. Keeping pace with medical advancements.

Really? Since when did babies become state property?

This IS not a good time to be ATTACKING President Bush. We are IN a WAR now. President Bush is ON our side. The TERRORISTS are on the OTHER side. DO you want President Bush to BREAK the 1993 rules? If you tell President Bush break the 1993 RULES and he says OK I will BREAK the 1993 rules then maybe he WILL break OTHER rules that you LIKE. President Bush is not LIKE President Clinton. President Bush will not BREAK the 1993 rules even if you ASK him. President Bush WILL play by the rules. Even the 1993 RULES that he wants to CHANGE. Please quit ATTACKING President Bush. He is ON our side. I KNOW you will STOP now so I am FINISHED. Thank you.

The Reductionists appear to be winning. However, the Reality Test is still to come.
