FR EXCLUSIVE: Yemeni National Captured in Arizona, Five Yemenis May Still Be At Large
7 July 2002 | Spiff

Posted on 07/07/2002 9:31:51 AM PDT by Spiff

(Sierra Vista, AZ) Reports from unnamed informants within the U.S. Border Patrol describe an incident which occurred on July 2nd at a checkpoint 20 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border. Sources say that a number of illegals were spotted by Border Patrol agents moving through the desert in an apparent attempt to go around a permanent checkpoint located on State Route 90 just 12 miles north of Sierra Vista, Arizona. It was surmised by the agents that these illegals had been dropped off from a smuggler’s vehicle a few miles south of the checkpoint and were going to meet back up with the smuggler vehicle a few miles north after circumventing the checkpoint. From there, the illegals would have been driven to Interstate Highway 10 and taken to points unknown. This sort of activity is a common occurrence at this checkpoint.

The illegals were apprehended by the Border Patrol and taken into custody. It was determined that among the group was one Yemeni national and several Mexicans. When questioned, the Yemeni national said that he had been among a group of six Yemenis who had earlier crossed the border together. The report of the five additional Yemeni intruders caused the Border Patrol to dispatch a helicopter from Tucson (approximately 70 miles northwest) to the checkpoint. In addition, it is reported that U.S. Customs dispatched a helicopter to the area of the apprehension to conduct a search from the air. The Yemenis were not found and may still be at large. Sources say that the FBI was notified but that the level of FBI interest and/or involvement is not known at this time.

These same sources report that U.S. Border Patrol Agent in charge of the Tucson Sector, David Aguilar, has ordered his agents to keep quiet about this incident. Reportedly, Aguilar has issued several such gag orders recently – demanding that Border Patrol agents keep quiet about happenings along the border. In June, Aguilar spoke at the annual convention of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and told of the government’s humanitarian responsibility to protect Mexican citizens who are illegally crossing into the United States (See Washington Times - June 27). As evidence of Aguilar’s confusion about the Border Patrol’s mission, he recently redeployed his agents away from the border itself and has instead deployed them into the larger desert areas to rescue illegals found to be in distress. It is also reported that Aguilar has ridiculously attempted to explain away the trails of footprints, garbage, and trail markings left by the hordes of illegals crossing through private, state, and federal lands as instead being evidence of the area’s new popularity to hikers and campers because of the success of the Border Patrol at apprehending and stopping the illegals.

Sounds like at least some of the Mexicans alerted authorities to the Arabs. If only we had agencies that would immediately act upon this news.

I think the U.S. also needs to put some pressure on Central and South America as well. These middle easterners are getting into Mexico via Brazil and Guatamala.

You've only been here a month. After 2 or 3 years, other Freepers will be a little less skeptical of the motive behind your unrelenting criticism of this thread, maybe. ;^)

My brother in Law is a Border Patrolman under this guy. He refuses to talk about anything they do there. I find it hard to believe that at a time like this we have a Hispanic American in charge of stopping Mexicans from crossing the border. Agluilar's obvious conflict of interest in this is a threat to the security of the nation. While he is refusing to patrol the borders properly to let Mexicans in to the US (a clear violation of the law) he is allowing other nationals who could be coming here for terrorism to cross unimpeded. But then I guess GW needs some new Mexican voters….Gaggggggggggggg…

This information was leaked by agents within the Border Patrol who seem to agree with your assessment.

The agents on the ground are patriots. They love this nation!

They see how the borders have been made useless and the powerful want them to have token jobs..

God Bless our BPA...You guys are our last defense!

The chief U.S. Border Patrol agent said yesterday that the government has a responsibility to protect Mexican citizens who are illegally crossing into the United States.

Our responsibility is to protect our borders.

"Are Yemeni illegals future Republicans, too?"

Not sure about that, but it's a good bet they're future cab and limo drivers.

How fortunate 5 more show up just as we lost a primo '5 Star' limo driver this last '4th of July'.

Ain't it grand to live in a country without borders?

Who are you talking to in this post? And what exactly is it you're trying to say with all this? Guy posts something he found out on a forum. I'm glad he did. I enjoyed reading the post and found it to be an interesting note. Do I realistically think Helen Thomas is going to ask Ari about it now? No. But if I hear something about some Yemenis getting up to something now, I will probably stop and say hmmm. Yeah, Spiff was saying something about that.

The only reason I ever replied to you in the first place was just to remind you that this was a forum and that Spiff's post should be taken for what it's worth- I'm not reacting to it the same way I would if Dan Rather said it because CBS is a NEWS SOURCE and Free Republic is an online FORUM. You expect to hear hard news that you can bank on at one place and you can get just about anything at the other- but to tell you the truth, lately I'm pretty certain I'm getting better info here than I ever would listening to Rather (not that I can). I don't see any need to bust Spiff's b@lls about it. Why do you?

It's an interesting tidbit. If the O'Reilly factor digs into it and finds out more- the hot tip from an "inside source" turned out to be a good lead and I can sit back and say "I knew it before the big boys did". If not- (shrugs shoulders) I heard it on an internet forum- no big loss. That's the reality of the situation. Why do you care so much? For what it's worth, the guy's been a member for a LONG time and yes, that lends some credibility to his story. I mean if you're just going to totally disbelieve everything everyone here says, why bother? I take it at face value the same way I would if somebody I knew told it to me and since the story sounds plausible, I don't have any reason to doubt it and I can't see where Spiff is getting any personal gain from spreading a false rumor why should I not (take it FWIW)? If you think it needs salt- take it with a grain of salt. I don't care.

BTW, sorry if it took me a while to answer. Watching a movie- Meet the Parents- funny flick.

Houston FReeped the LULAC convention. A lot of tape was shot by the local tv stations (see photos), but not one second of it was aired.

Where exactly is this checkpoint on 90? near Huachuca City or further north?

The permanent checkpoint is on Highway 90 a few miles north of Huachuca City, just north of the intersection with Highway 82. Smugglers drop off illegals on Highway 82, turn on to Highway 90, pass through the checkpoint with only a cursory check, continue up Highway 90 to a point over the hill from the checkpoint, and pick up the illegals. I've seen dozens of illegals at a time running down a well worn path coming out of the desert there.

America's Most Wanted did a show about this last year. They found that a lot of times gangs from Tucson and Phoenix are hired to come down and pick up these illegals after the coyotes have dropped them off. Apparently there's a lot of money to be made in smuggling these invaders.

Ok, this needs to be said. And you can take this as second-hand information -- my source is a firsthand eyewitness. He worked Department of Corrections road crews for 3 years and saw Border Patrol apprehensions routinely. And if that's not good enough, check out MI's profile page.

Illegal crossers into Cochise County from Mexico include: Mexicans, Guatemalans, Nicaraguans, El Salvadorans, Chinese, Polish, Czech, Russian, and Egyptian nationals. And with Spiff's info, we now know (at least, I'm convinced) that Yemeni's have also crossed into the U.S. illegally.

Why? Well, it's a good bet it isn't for jobs or an education. The infiltration is on, and the numbers have to be horrendous, considering we stop less than a quarter of all crossers.

Nuff' said?

Thanks for the ping!

If some of these people responding early in the thread had any idea who was posting, they wouldn't have criticised his facts.

A friend of mine (BP) was talking two weeks ago about the headcount of illegals moving up the San Pedro River where AZ92 crosses in Palominas. In early June, they were counting about 500 a week. That's foot traffic in a 50 yard corridor.

We're little more than a freakin' sieve down here.

People I talk to within the Border Patrol are telling me that the number of OTMs (Other Than Mexicans) being apprehended have recently seen a sharp rise.

I'm not surprised that the OTM numbers have risen.
They've lost traditional means and methods of immigration after 9/11.
I'd lean more toward them having militaristic motives rather than economic as a reason for entering our county...and that's scary.
