This article basically says that the reason low-fat diets don't work is because people don't feel full as fast on carbs, and eat more. That's a self-control issue, not a nutrition issue. There's nothing new here.

What I take from this loooooong treatise is a confirmation of something I've known for years.

That is; forget the 'medical menu of the month' crap which changes as often as the wind direction and practice moderation in everything that goes into the body.

We have been told at one time or another that every food group is "bad for us", "ok in reasonable amounts", "no problem" and "eat all you want."

Scienctific research is forever correcting itself.

Eat a pizza and call me in the morning!

It is very significant that the Puritans (where food and smoking are concerned) at the New York Times have published this article. I have done extensive research on the subject of weight loss and have tried many different types of diets myself. For years I have been telling my family and friends that refined carboydrates, particularly nonfat refined carbos, are the real cause of obesity. You would think I had been proclaiming nonsense about space aliens arriving on Planet Earth! Atkins has been right for thirty years and the medical establishment has been wrong (or lying). Most of these so-called experts advise their obese patients to exercise and eat nonfat pretzels. Yeah, right, that'll really work. Atkins is right and the fact that The New York Times is obliquely acknowledging this means that it is now too obvious to deny any longer that Atkins -- gasp -- was right all along.

A guy I work with lost a LOT of weight........and rapidly. I asked him about it, and he said that he cut out carbs; breads, etc. That was it; that was all. I couldn't believe it; the difference was THAT significant.

As a satisfied "researcher" of the Low Carbohydrate eating plans, let me tell you unequivocally that it WORKS. When I started my diet, I weighed 245 pounds, and my blood pressure was 220/110. Within a week of beginning the diet, I had to stop taking my medication because my blood pressure dropped into the low-normal range and stayed there. Last time I had my blood fats checked, I had an overall cholesterol count of 179, with the ratio so favorable that the nurse was very impressed. My website, OPINIONS UNLIMITED has a large section on low carbohydrate eating and the implications, ramifications, and consequences of high-carbohydrate eating. Just click on the "Nutrition" link on the left-hand side of the front page, and browse the numerous pages in that section. There are articles by myself, as well as several other writers on the subject. Enjoy. < /shameless self-promotion>

Thanks Pokey, I needed this boost. I lost 20 lbs in 4 months (and I don't lose easily) a few years ago. I kept it off with no trouble as long as I walked 4x a week. Then a couple of minor injuries kept me from walking & I gained it back. I have been in conversation with myself about doing it again & this helps. To you nay-sayers that say this is wrong, the same diet isn't good for everyone, so don't discourage those who want to try this. It may be just what they need.

I have discovered this myself from other research I have been doing, including from a wonderful doctor at the heath clinic in Santa Barbara. It has been obvious for sometime now that low fat diets were making people fat!
I eat real butter, cream, and red meat! It is much better for you than fake food! LOL

To study the entire physiological system involves feeding real food to real human subjects for months or years on end,

How about prisoners?

All I can say is thank God for Dr. Atkins. 110 lbs later, free from the symptoms of diabetes, sleep apnea, acid reflux and hypertension, triglycerides that were in the 1600-1700 range now at around 100 and more energy than since I was a teenager, I feel qualified to say that Dr. Atkins knows what he's talking about.

I believe in a seafood diet. I Eat everything I see.

Each food has something good in it to cancel out the bad from other foods

I followed a low fat diet for many years. You can lose weight on it, but it is not necessarily easy as you can get VERY hungry, as the article suggests. Most folks gain weight on it.

In September, I switched to a low carb (no sugar, no starch) diet. It includes lots of protein, including plenty of red meat (since starch is cut out) + a reasonable amount of fruit and vegetables. Animal fat is no longer restricted, though partially hydrogenated fat is.

End result is that I feel and look 7 or 8 years younger than I did, have more energy and endurance and my anxiety level is the lowest I remember.

I know there are convincing studies and statistics for both sides of this debate, but for me, since I've tried both, the way I feel compared to the way I felt, says it all.

My feeling is that low fat diets not only cause most folks to get fatter, they accelerate the aging process and are destructive to good health.

big FAT bump (for later).

I've tried the Atkins diet before, but giving up the "ultimate carb" (i.e. the kind that comes in 12 ounce cans) has been the hardest part! Invent a low-carb BEER and we'll all be happy and slim !:-)

Why does everything have to be so damn complicated? Eat protein and carbohydrates and fat from all the food groups in appropriate moderation, then excercise. No research, no government guidelines, no "name" diets, no blaming food companies. Eating food should not be this hard.
