Do you honestly believe that a mere 17.5 grams of additional carbohydrates (the amount found in a 6 oz. glass of grapefruit juice) can cause such metabolic havoc as to completely halt fat burning??

Some require even less. For example, my wife began to steadily lose weight only after reducing her intake to below 20 gms of carbohydrates per day. She also has to strictly watch her calories.

I can show MANY more cultures that are more healthy and productive then the ones named in the articles. Asian cultures come to mind. Carbohydrates are NOT devoid of nutrients. I have alreadt posted that they are the MAIN source of energy for the brain. None of the other macro nutrients provide this energy for the brain, which might explain why the cultures you mentioned are all dying and almost extinct and the cultures I mentioned are thriving. I know its reaching on my part but it is true.

Arioch, yes that is really reaching because if carbs were essential to survivial, then one would die *WHEN* deprived of them, not 5 generations later. That makes no sense. One does die, however, when deprived of protein and fat. And Alaskans are certainly not dead by any stretch, just a little unhealthier, sicker and fatter with the advent of the typical high carb American food pyramid diet [per recent studies]. There is untold evidence of people surviving just fine without carbs.

Even so, noone here is advocating a NO carb diet and sees the value in the proper amount of UNREFINED carbs. There are some nutrients in vegetables that can't be found in meat, eggs, etc. No one denies that. Certainly NOT as nutritionally rich, but important to overall health.

Further, the Asians have a diet that consists of very little refined carbs and they do not have the obesity that we do. They are certainly not extinct! Nor are the French or Italian, who have moderate to high fat diets. You are basically claiming that any culture that has a high fat diet is extinct - or on thier way out - yet you produce NONE. Not one.

So maybe you aren't convinced despite NUMEROUS examples and studies but that is really your own blindess and stubbornness. None are so blind than those who refuse to see. It's not my job to convince you against your will and against all reason and logic. That is your issue entirely.

Numerous cardiologists, and researchers at prestigious universities like University of Pennsylvania, Duke University, Purdue, Harvard, Science Magazine among many ARE convinced and I think I will stick with them. In fact, my health warrants it.

Senator Parduk has stated that NO pro athlete uses this diet and was met with scorn. The fact is that pro athletes are the pinnacle of fitness and should be emulated.

He was met with scorn because it is a bogus point. Most people are not body builders. One does not judge a diet by WHO uses it but by the merits of the diet. I know of none who are on Weight Watchers or The Zone, however, that does not mean they are bad diets. If you are going to judge a diet on THIS bogus standard you have erected, then you have to HAIL the Atkins diet because Arnold Schwarzenegger is on it and writes about it in his book.

Bumped for later reading.

I do find it curious how my father managed to eat stuff fried in lard, real butter and eggs, fatty meats, and every sweet under the sun all of his life, but was always rail-thin. I ate watered-down margarine instead of butter, corn oil instead of lard, and baked (fill in the blank) instead of fried (fill in the blank), but was still the tubbo in the family.

I hate my genes.

He also advocated eating read meat. His first big selling book, ''Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution'' advocated primarily low-carb/high protein diet. Do you deny that or is it your selective omission in a sort of tail-chasing rationalization you use to support calling Atkins a huckster? Just why do you think Atkins is a huckster and is it a primary point of his or some tangential point he made that you arrived at your "huckster" conclusion.

I am illiterate when it comes to health. Both my wife and I are wanting to change our lifestyle, lose weight, exercise (I'm more in need of toning up rather than trimming down). I'm getting a lot of conflicting messages here, but what I take away from it is this: I should eat a high protein diet with lots of veggies, low on fruit, rarely eat starches and eliminate all the junk in addition to exercising (weight training, etc.). Would this be the moderate approach? streetpreacher,

Basically, it the diet that most of the world ate until the advent of the low fat/high carb fad: whole, unprocessed foods. What it comes down to is you eliminate refined carbs, such as white and wheat breads, sugar, sugary fruit drinks and processed or chemical laden meats.

My menu includes meat, fish, cheese, eggs, vegetables, nuts, beans and low glycemic fruits. Starchy fruits and veggies are not good for you and should be eaten in moderation because they are very high in sugar.

This is not a starvation diet that is low in fat or calories so you can live on it forever and never get hungry. I would suggest checking out his website to get more information but if you decide to do it, it's real important to buy the book.

And you don't have to be a weightlifter, but Atkins does recommend exercise. Weightlifting is great, though!

Well, it's just from personal experience. All the Atkins folks I know love to slab 8 oz. of mayo on a plate of bacon and eggs.

BTW - can you tell me which pro athlete follows this regimen?

Go HERE and also get Atkins' book. Read the whole book and lay in the right food. Also, no matter what the book says, you would kill for a donut after a few days. Once your body kicks into fat burning the diet is basically effortless. Also I found that potassium and l-carnitine help a great deal when you first get on the diet

'Cuse me, but I once went on a low carb diet. During this time I caught a virus that was making the rounds and wound up having to see my Doctor because of it. I happened to mention the diet that I was on to my Doctor and he told me to immediately stop the diet because a low carb diet can cause kidney failure. The one way I have found to loose weight is to cut back on sugar and fat. Not eliminate them completely. Just reduce them in my diet - especially sugar.

Proud, overweight people need to completely eliminate sugar becuase sugar causes carb cravings and metabolism problems. Sugar is junk food and is not good for you at all.

Further, if your doctor knows of ONE CASE of kidney failure caused by low carb could you please tell him to call a press conference immediately and present his evidence? If this is so, it will be the ONLY documented case on record since there are none. There is not one single study that proves such thing. The public should be warned immediately!

As usual the opponents of this diet have to resort to lies and use hyperbole. And I have always found you to be level headed and have an unusually good sense of humor until this thread.

Well, it's just from personal experience.

What was it about your personal experience that you concluded that Atkins is a huckster? Also, do you conclude that other products and services that you try out but don't meet your needs are created by hucksters?

My wife brought home a copy of Protein Power 7 years ago and said we were going on a diet. I laughed at her until I read the book. It is basically what I ate when I was single (though there was a great deal more junk food then.) My wife and I went on it it and it has helped us greatly. I don't exercise a bit ( I know Atkins says you should) and I am 5'8" and weigh 155. This is what I weighed at 20 and am now 40. I will bet my body fat is within a few percent of Pardek's and I literally am a couch potato.

Wrong - Atkins claims one can eat cheese all day long - that's not high protein - it's high fat. Big difference.

huh? since when? Cheese has as much protein as fat. Your average unprocessed cup of cheese is 33 grams of fat and 31 grams of protein. That's alot of protein considering that the average person has 85 grams a day total. Even so, in RECENT renditions of Atkins books he does limit cheese because of the high protein. It used to be on the unlimited list. Too much protein is as bad as too much carbs.

I'm 275lbs and I've been known to leg press 20 plates (45's) for sets of 10 and bench 390 for sets of 10. (hope that answers any questions about MY qualifications...)

Yeah, but I bet you look ridiculous in Armani.
