CAIRO: The father of Egyptian gunman Hisham Mohammed Hadayet who opened fire at a check-in counter of Israeli carrier El Al in Los Angeles was a general in Egypt's army, his neighbors said Friday.
The former general, Ahmad Ali Hadayet, lives in the family household in the central Abbassiya district in Cairo, an AFP reporter said.
The information was confirmed by security sources here, but the family refused to talk to reporters.
On Thursday, Hisham Hadayet opened fire at the check-in counter of Israel's national airline El Al killing a 20-year-old female clerk and a middle-aged man, before being shot dead himself by an El Al security agent.
"I have known Hisham for several years. He was a normal person, he was religious but did not go often to the mosque," one of his neighbors said, requesting anonymity.
Hadayet's wife and two children returned to Egypt in June, security sources said. They added that his wife has been questioned, without elaborating.
FBI officials said that Hadayet was on their watch list, without saying why. They added he had lived in the United States since 1992 and worked as a limousine driver.
Egyptian officials kept mum Friday after the FBI revealed one of their fellow nationals carried out the Los Angeles attack. Officials at the interior ministry refused to comment when questioned by reporters.
Lawyer Montasser al-Zayet, who defends Egyptian Islamists in court, said Hadayet was not known to be a member of any Islamist movement.
If he was on the watch list, shouldn't that have been a red flag?
By the way, if he was on the watch list, how can they say with a straight face that this was not terrorism?
They withheld his identity until the July 4th festivities were over.
First you flatten and demoralize them...........then you show them the path to recovery.
(these may have been answered in news articles, etc that I haven't seen)
1.Wife and kid returned to Egypt in June. Why? Domestic problems?
2.Was attacker in line for a flight? If so, did he actually think he'd get through security with firearms?
I hope the ragheads in BFE protest any cooperation their gov't gives to ours, it will show them as the true "friends" they have been!
Man Accused in Airport Shooting Declared Incompetent for Trial 06/20/2002
GRETNA, La. -- The Florida man accused of fatally shooting a woman inside the New Orleans international airport last month was declared incompetent to stand trial.
Patrick Gott, 43, of Pensacola, would be unable to assist an attorney in his defense and is a danger to himself and others, Judge Robert Burns said on Wednesday. Burns ruled after listening to the testimony of Dr. Richard Richoux, a psychiatrist who examined Gott at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center.
Gott could pose a threat to others because he suffers from paranoia and misinterprets other people's intentions, Richoux said.
On May 22, Gott allegedly fired a 12-gauge shotgun in the airport terminal, hitting Amy Michaelson, 45, a California resident and U.S. Department of Defense employee, and an airline employee whom authorities have not identified. Michaelson died several days later. The other victim was shot in the hand.
Gott later said he was a Muslim and got angry when people made fun of his turban, police said.
Gott will be held at the parish prison, with bond set at $1 million, until a bed becomes available at the East Feliciana Forensic Center in Jackson, prosecutor Walter Amstutz said. Gott's mental status will be re-examined in six months, Amstutz said.
Burns filled in for Judge Ronald Bodenheimer, who was suspended from the bench by the state Supreme Court after his arrest on federal drug and conspiracy charges.

______________
I remeber he was arrested in a loud Hawaiian shirt. Seemed insane, in the usual meaning. HOWEVER, the woman he blew away was a part of the Defense Dept. Hmmmmm......
The woman, one of two people wounded in the shooting Wednesday, has been identified only as a U.S. Defense Department employee from California in her 40s.
I think these people are all insane.
