ULTAN, Pakistan, July 1 -- A teenage girl was gang-raped in central Pakistan last month as "punishment" meted out by a tribal jury for her brother's supposed affair with a woman from a higher tribe, the police said today.
A panchayat, or tribal jury, ordered four men, including one of the jurists, to rape the 18-year-old girl on June 22 in the village of Meerwala, 75 miles southwest of here, the police said. She was then ordered to return home naked before 1,000 onlookers.

Gang-rape in Jatoi - Chief justice summons police IG, DIG
ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Shaikh Riaz Ahmed, while taking suo moto action on the press reports of a gang-rape incident, has summoned the Inspector General of Police, SHO and other officials of Meerwala Police Station along with official record on July 5, Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court, Aziz Ahmed, told the Daily Times on Wednesday.
“The reference number allotted to the case is suo moto case No 1 of 2002. It will be taken up in Lahore as Chief Justice of Pakistan is presently there,” he said and added: “Notices are being issued to the concerned police officials to appear before the court of Chief Justice in Lahore on July 5.”
Law minister transfers entire Jatoi police staff: Punjab Law Minister Rana Ijaz Ahmed Khan on Wednesday transferred the entire staff of Police Station Jatoi to other stations for negligence of duty and suspended from service with immediate effect, Station House Officer Nazir Bubbar and Assistant Sub-Inspector Iqbal Khan.
“It is true that Mukhtar Bibi, a divorcee, was gang-raped by four persons as per instructions of a panchayat (tribal jury) on June 22, and Mukhtar Bibi’s 11-years old brother Abdul Shakoor was also sexually assaulted (sodomized) by the same individuals for allegedly developing illicit affairs with Nasreen Mai (aged 30). It seems that Nasreen Mai lured the boy for her sexual satisfaction,” the minister told newsmen in Jatoi. He said that the boy’s medical examination was conducted on Wednesday, while Mukhtar Bibi’s medical examination was held on July 1.
The minister said an individual named Niaz Hussain Jatoi told him that Mukhtar Bibi’s maternal uncle Ghulam Hussain was kidnapped by members of the Mastoi tribe some time ago.
Law Minister Ijaz ordered the police to recover weapons from the Mastoi tribe and arrest all the accused and members of the tribal jury within 24 hours, adding all accused would be tried under the Anti-Terrorism Act in a special anti terrorism court. The law minister said people of the area narrated their tales of woes to him. He said a resident named Parl Khan Kharos told him that members of the Mastoi tribe kidnapped and sexually abused his daughters Maqsood Mai and Taj Mai over a dispute on irrigation water three years ago. Minister Ijaz said an 18-years old girl Miraj Mai was kidnapped from Jatoi nine month ago and sold in another locality. The police recently recovered her from Rasulpur (Jampur). The minister said another man named Mazhar Hussain alias Mattan Nahar complained that Mastois shaved off his eyebrows, moustache, beard and hair when he stopped Ashiq Mastoi and Mukhtar Mastoi from cracking vulgar jokes.
