San Antonio TX area flood thread

Record rainfall in SAN ANTONIO TX with over 10 inches at the airport breaking the all time month record for July in ONE DAY! doppler says 15-20 inches have fallen just north of SAN ANTONIO..roads closed, water rescues in progress. Rainfall rates of 3-5 inches per hour have been fallening in the area just north SAN ANTONIO. New radar shots the last few minutes show Moderate-Heavy rain moving/developing back towards SAN ANTONIO from the northwest.

Folks the system has stalled and I believe may be forming a tropical depression over land...How can this be? Well so much rain has fallen in the area and there is so much standing 78-80 degree water around its almost like being over an ocean. This has happened before with hurricane Danny which moved inland for days, weakened to nothing, dumped 14 inches of rain ahead of its path over NC..and was a strong tropical storm with 65 MPH winds as it moved off the coast!

In fact new radar shots showing almost "feeder" bands forming near the gulf.. Looks like the circulation is just NE SAN ANTONIO by 20 miles or so...Both visible and infared Satellite also very impressive

We're real wet up here north of San Marcos. Luckily we're in the hills and perhaps won't see flooding but I do worry about lower lying areas. We've been getting drenched since Friday. It's pouring right now!

Waco's Fourth celebration is on the banks of the Brazos so we'll have to wait and see if we get more heavy rain and how high the river goes. Should be okay since most of our runoff comes from the north. Looks like your area is being hammered now. So far just never ending light rain here. I pray this thing quits sitting over our neighbors to the south. They can't take much more.

Down here in Miami, floods are a daily occurance from late May-August.

We do re-enactments of biblical floods occasionally here in the San Antonio area just to break the monotony of hot and dry - last time was Oct 98 - time before that was May 93 (as I recall). Anyway, this is for excitement, not because we're looking for sympathy - LOL!

the upside of all this rain is that "they" just lifted the county-wide ban on aerial fireworks for the 4th of July! ANY fireowrks are still illegal within the San Antonio city limits (had a 12 y-o girl killed by a bottle-rocket to the temple a few years back), but out in the county, watch out, America!!

It's getting better in the city..I-10 reopened..but this morning a 12 foot wall of water hit the highway...semi's were floating down it...blackhawk helicopters from the local army base helped with the rescues..
looks like the low is still parked just north of san antinio...these lows have a pattern of stroms firing near the center at night. these then weaken during the day but storm form in feeder bands on the east side of it..which is happening now

yeah, north and west of austin, we're getting a ton of rain here. lots of flooding, our county (williamson) under a flood watch. even with all our rain, we've gotten about half of what people 50 miles down the road have. this thing is stalled.

I remember that one. Use to travel the road to Hondo fm Bandera and that rain washed out a bridge over one of those "dry" creek beds.

Looks like they are beginning to evacuate parts of downtown Austin along Lamar Blvd and Shoal Creek.
Dripping Springs west of Austin is now completely shut off, nobody can get in or out.
Walnut Creek in east Austin is on the rampage as well and firefighters are evacuating houses and mobile homes.
It aint over yet folks! Here in Elgin we have had a total of 9.23 inches since this began a few days ago. Thank god for the rain!

It has rained somewhat in Houston but nothing like what San Antonio has gotten. We had our flood a year or so back. Hopefully will not have another one like that

I'm so happy to hear that you are okay. I have been wondering about you as I have heard some reports from Bandera, and they haven't sounded too good. It's a pity that your Texas vacation has been a wash (pun intended). This is certainly not normal weather for us in July, but then, we didn't have our usual rains in Feb. Mar. April and May, so we are far behind in rainfall. At this point, though, enough is enough!!

Have a safe trip back home when you can get out. It was a pleasure to have you join us last Saturday.

The national weather service in austin san antonio has issued a * Flash flood warning for the following counties. Williamson travis gillespie hays kerr kendall real caldwell comal bandera guadalupe gonzales bexar medina uvalde wilson dewitt karnes * Until 800 pm cdt

* At 348 pm. Weather service doppler radar patches of light rain with isolated thunderstorms. Rainfall rates were generally less than one-tenth inch or less with isolated rates of near 1 inch in thunderstorms.

Additional thunderstorms developing over far southern texas will move into south central texas later this afternoon causing flood problems to become worse.

I'm sitting here on the banks of the Pedernales just E of Johnson City. The water WAS receding after coming halfway up my 8 ft game fence along the river, the base of which is 75 ft from the river and 12 ft above. It has to rise another twelve feet to make it into the house which has never happened before. We are certified OUT of the flood plain. BUT we are now in another cloudburst (about two to three inches per hour) and who knows what could happen. Luckilly the river and the land drops fast around here and drains quickly. Prayers appreciated.

I hate to disagree here about the "may be forming a tropical depression over land" comment (and haven't read the other posts yet to see if someone has pointed this out yet)....but that ain't gonna happen (my best Texan speak). Danny was a tropical system when it moved inland...and then moved out over the gulf stream. This system:

1) Is Not a tropical system...but an upper level feature.

2) Has no surface low

3) The rotation you see on radar is a reflection of the mid-level system

4) It is over land. It doesn't matter if the temps are 100 degrees...and the whole area is flooded...it will not convert into a tropical depression while over land. If it were over an island...maybe....but not while sitting in south-central Texas.

5) This system is baroclinic...tropical systems are baro-tropic. The system had a chance to convert when it was over the NW gulf last week...and it didn't do it. It will not do it when it is over land. Will bet my house against anyone elses...and give you 10 to 1 odds:-)

Just a 15 year meteorologist's opinion...and a tropical NUTCASE.

It's not tropical...the rain bands are swirling around the mid-level low. There is no low pressure at the surface.
