A teenage girl was gang-raped in central Pakistan last month as "punishment" meted out by a tribal jury for her brother's alleged affair with a woman of a higher tribe, police said.
A Panchayat, or tribal jury, ordered four men, including one of the jurists, to rape the 18-year-old girl on June 22 in the village of Meerwala.
Meerwala lies 610 kilometres south-west of the capital Islamabad.
District police chief Malik Saeed Awan said authorities were informed of the publicly-ordered gang-rape several days after the incident.
He said four men took turns to sexually assault the girl inside a room. She was then ordered to return home naked before 1,000 onlookers.
The rape was to avenge the "insult" caused to a family of the Mastoi tribe by the girl's brother's alleged "illicit affair" with a woman of a higher social standing.
The girl and her brother were from the lower Gujjar tribe.
The Panchayat had threatened that all women in the accused's family would be raped unless the 18-year-old submitted herself to the public gang rape.
Awan said police were taking action against members of the Panchayat.
Lawyers visiting the tribal area on Sunday urged the authorities to prosecute the rapists and the jury.

Thanks, Don, but I've read a zillion of 'em. Matter of fact the whole of 'breaking news' seems to be full of them, some days.
Hey, talking about 'atrocities against women and children', how about the airstrike on the Afghani wedding? D'you think we'll see the same level of mock outrage about that, from our fellow Freepers?
Okay, who in the West openly advocates taking women as slaves and raping them?
Good for you. Islam is a religion of peace, after all.
I well remember the official condolences of all the Arab and Muslim nations, with the exception of Iraq and Afghanistan. I also remember the public mourning of crowds in Tehran, and in Beirut. The street parties we saw were mostly in Palestinian refugee camps, as I remember.
Well, the incident is still being investigated. Talk about jumping the gun... Anyway, you are equating an incident that, if occurred, was an accident to deliberate atrocities by Muslims. That is a little telling about your thought processes. BTW, I understand the Muslims in Australia are not too nice to Australian women. There have been quite a few cases of Muslim men raping Australian women. Oh, well, those things happen, right? They probably deserved it.
Are you kidding me?
After a week they would return them with monetary compensation.
"Dude, I am REALLY SORRY.. Here's a million bucks and if I never hear 'turn left.. back there!' again it will be too soon"
You think this is and example of media activism?
Some domestic problem was said to be behind the suicide.
[The tribal name is frequently incorporated into the surname.]
I don't recall the bomber claiming that he did this as a white person and as the representative of all white people. Had he done so, I would have gladly stood up and announced that he didn't speak for me.
I agree with much of what you've said here, but you lose me with this post. Silence equals assent.
My wife is angered when pro-abortion women choose to present themselves as the spokesperson for all women. Why weren't Muslims outraged when bin Laden presented himself as their spokesman?
True, a camera's presence changes the reality of what is being filmed, but they were gleeful, and for that we rightly winced with angst when we saw that. Even so, rational conservatives do not condemn a whole people or religion for that, while DU provocateurs and militia nutcase yahoos might.
