Having flown that God-forsaken airline more times than I care to remember, I am downright cheered at this news. They ought to arrest everyone from the CEO on down to the toilet scrubber for gross incompetency and plain rudeness.

The only excuse for flying sober on a plane with a drunk crew, is being too stingy to spend your whole months liquor allowance on one pre-flight binge in the airport bar.
Having no way of knowing the degree of sobriety the crew of the upcoming flight may be in, the experienced airline customer prepares for the worst. That is why burp bags were the first freebies introduced by the airlines.

The Man Show did a funny skit on drunken pilots a few days ago..... In the otherwise very disappointing Cheech and Chong film, "Still Smokin'", there's a hilarious and completely amazing sequence where a character flies a small corporate jet in for a landing while extremely stoned.
In a stunt that was obviously actually performed instead of done with special effects, the stunt pilot skews the plane almost sideways, does half a roll, and several other astounding "wobbles" while the jet comes right down to the runway.

made the arrests Monday afternoon after ground crew workers reported smelling alcohol on the pilot and officer. I'm sure it's all a terrible mistake, they were just trying out the new bourbon-scented cologne from Jack Daniels, it's the latest "name brand" fashion line like the Tabasco ties...

I knew a captain for Continental who was an alcoholic. So nothing surprises moi.

Yeah I am serious that I heard it! And yes .08 is the legal driving limit in a lot of states...
The Federal Aviation Regulations have a much lower legal limit... .04 (Airlines obviously have a .00 limit as a policy)

Federal Aviation Regulations can pull their license for an alcohol-related driving arrest, let alone flying. The airlines and the feds don't have tolerance for this... Their careers just ended.

Well, not to excuse anything above .00 when flying, you may be overstating it a bit. .08 is barely buzzed. I remember in college taking a breathalyzer to see what .10 "felt" like, and I was surprised to learn that at .10, I still would have called myself sober.

I agree that .08 does not constitute "drunk." But any pilot flying for a major airline carrier has it drummed into their heads over and over again that any amount of drinking 24 hours before a flight is unacceptable. Pilots are very well compensated (average $80,000 a year salary) and get plenty of time off between duty cycles to quaff beers. So I have little sympathy for them. They had to know the rules and the consequences of being caught breaking them.

Agreed... no pity for the pilots should have been implied from what I said... When I said their careers are over, I was not feeling any sympathy for them... Any pilot (I am a pilot myself) has it drummed into them that alcohol is not allowed anywhere near you when flying. When I was in college with a bunch of other future pilots who loved to party, we crossed a lot of lines, but never that one.
I just wanted to keep our FRiend honest about their actual state of drunkeness... Their sin was big enough without exaggerating it.
