My sister-in-law lives in nearby Sturgis.
She helped a co-worker move belongings from her Spearfish Canyon home today.
The terrain is quite rugged and it is very dry around there.
The fire is at least 1000 acres now and has burned at least 2 houses we know of.
It was extremely hot and dry today: 108 degrees in Rapid City.

Aug 5th is the rally. I hope the town is okay in timefor them to benefit from it.

More fires! Perhaps acts of terrorism?
To: RedBloodedAmerican
Hope so. Those people rely so heavily on tourism; if a fire messes up the area and tourists stay away, they will be hard-pressed to survive financially.
I just noticed that I'm wearing my Sturgis Rally 2000 t-shirt! Wotta coincidence, huh?

I'm guessing not. Many fires in that area start from careless campers or smokers; most others are lightning-caused.

Modern day Sabertooth?

No...Sis-in-law gave me the shirt. But poorman's parents go every year and bring back some interesting video footage.

Sorry to hear this. Hope South Dakota's fire is controlled sooner than ours in Arizona.

Indeed. Lots of fires now and to come this summer. The one near San Bernardino that blocked I-15 is within sight of my aunt Linda's home.
Even though I live in WI, these fires affect me personally (which is probably true for a lot of Eastern-living Freepers).
Here's to the firefighters/smokejumpers whose task is thankless at best and dangerous at all times...

Is this fire burning in an area under the management of the US Forest Service?

With what happened with some other fires recently, I am not sure you would call it "management".
