Escapee Loses Arm
Posted: 1:18 p.m. MDT June 28, 2002
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Albuquerque police say a man who escaped from their custody lost his arm while trying to remove his handcuffs on a passing train.
A.P.D. believes the man was trying to use the train to cut the cuffs.
The man escaped last night. He was found a short while later.
His arm was found in a nearby parking lot. The man was taken to University of New Mexico Hospital in serious condition.
Today, he has been upgraded to satisfactory condition.

Well, it will make it harder for police to handcuff him next time.

I would have loved to see his face the moment he realized that it wouldn't work.

Wait! If his hands were handcuffed together, how did he only lose one arm?

Today, he has been upgraded to satisfactory condition...while continuing to remain stupid.

You've got to HAND it to him. He's a Darwin Award nominee.

Let me type this slowly so you can understand.
He laid one hand on the inside of the track...one on the outside of the track...while laying the chain across the track.

Darwin awards are only given out to those whose actions remove them from the gene pool.
To: chance33_98
Well, did it work ?
To: N. Theknow
He could still get a Darwin Honorable Mention.

How does someone that stupid escape in the first place?
To: CedarDave
"Well, it will make it harder for police to handcuff him next time."LOL! Until your post, I had never even thought about that. How do cops restrain one-armed bandits, I wonder?

Watched one too many Steve McQueen movies I'd say....

Is it my imagination, or has there been a virtual orgy of stupidity of late?

If that's the way it happened, he does and always will have the intelligence of a brine shrimp. I was trying to figure out how he lost the arm by putting the chain on the rail with both hands on the outside (and hoping the wheel would flatten and break the chain). I didn't even consider that he would be so utterly stupid as to try what you describe. (BTW, that location is at the north end of the ABQ yard so the train would have been moving at 10-15 mph, tops.)

Hey let's all give this guy a HAND!!

I believe you can remove genital piercings in a similar manner...
