Greenfield - A man who tried to rob a Greenfield gun shop at knifepoint Thursday afternoon was shot in the chest by the shop owner, police said.

The victim, identified only as a 57-year-old Greenfield man, was taken to Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital in Wauwatosa, according to police.

Police have yet to interview the victim because the shooting left him unconscious, Detective Sgt. Paul Schlecht said.

Schlecht said later Thursday that the man's wound was not life threatening. The man's condition was not available Thursday evening from Froedtert.

Schlecht said the shooting took place at about 3 p.m. inside Buckhorn Guns, one of four businesses located in a plaza in the 2700 block of W. Ramsey Ave.

The parking lot of the plaza was surrounded by yellow police tape Thursday afternoon as police investigated the shooting.

Schlecht said he did not know what the suspect demanded but said there is nothing to indicate the account of the incident that the store owner gave police was not true.

He said the store owner, 44, shot the man once in the chest and that apparently no one else was inside the store when the shooting took place. The store owner was not injured.

Schlecht said the case is being referred to the Milwaukee County district attorney's office, which will review the actions of the suspect and the shop owner. A case review could happen today, he said.

I think it's called 'pulling youself up by your bootstraps'.

He didn't have a gun (which he need for his career of robber), so he used a knife, to get a gun, so that he could properly, and with pride, continue to build a resume.

Funniest one (looking back--it weren't so funny when it happened) was in an all-night coffee & donut shop. I was with some friends, driving back to Beaufort, South Carolina after a week's duty in Cherry Point. It was shift change for the police (or PO-leece, as they say in South Carolina), so there were about two dozen cops in the place.

The robber walked past a parking lot full of police cruisers, walks into the shop, pulls out a gun, fires a round into the ceiling, and shouts "THIS IS A--"

I remember hitting the floor and (a) losing control of my sphincters, (b) hoping that the cops had been to the pistol range recently, and (c) realizing that two dozen semi-autos going off at once is REALLY LOUD.

Darwin Award winner of the month.

I don't know. There is some pretty stiff competition this month. See this story posted yesterday.

Pakistan wedding turns to carnage

A wedding feast in north-east Pakistan turned to carnage after a mortar shell launched in celebration misfired, killing 21 people, including the bridegroom. More than 40 guests were wounded in the accident, which happened in the village of Korez, 250 kilometres (180 miles) south-west of the border city of Peshawar.

Local officials said guests had been "joyously" firing their weapons in the air in a traditional act of celebration, when one of the groom's relatives loaded the mortar "upside-down".

It exploded prematurely, killing several people outright.

The wounded were taken to a government hospital in Kohat, where some of them died from their injuries, hospital sources said.

Officials said 14 children, women and the 22-year-old bridegroom were among the dead.

Korez is in the lawless region of Orakzai, where tribes are powerful and the government has little influence.

Weapons are freely available on the black market there.

What's that great line Sean Connery had in the Kevin Costner movie, "The Untouchables"

An assassin had snuck in to Connery's house, and Connery got the upper-hand, then said,

"Just like a Wop to bring a knife to a gunfight."

I was thinking more along the lines of the bazaar scene in "Raiders of the Lost Ark".
