OTOH, if that is their SOP, it would explain their 90+ percent in solved crimes. Ruh roh.

Because they had already stuck their collective heads in the noose. This is why I think that the shell casing is of major importance.
The shell casing showed up on the second day of the search of Danielle's room. At this point, LE was probably still looking at DVD/BVD as suspects.
I believe Damon placed the shell casing there, said "we don't own a gun", and BVD told LE to look at DW.
If the VD's don't own a gun, then the perp (that dropped the shell casing) MUST have come from outside the home.
It would definitely shift attention to an armed intruder entering the home, as opposed to parental involvement.

Aren't they obligated to share with the defense any fibers, hair, etc. that they may have retrieved from the van, or elsewhere, and opted not to send out for analysis? I would think so, I am not a lawyer so I can't say for sure. Then again, it may be they only have to share evidence they will be using to prosecute. As said, before, wish AMORE was here.

NOW, there are 2 versions from this point on......
I kinda like both of your versions.
In fact they both make sense.
Maybe while in the Bathroom Danielle ran into Damons leg and her (permanant-adult-front-teeth) were accidentally knocked out. She starts to panic, scream,he grabs a bath towel and covers her face, he accidently smothers her. Picks her up and carry's her down the stairs, gets blood on handrail, wall, threshold, garage floor, etc... that could have happened.
Well the same sorta happened to the dog....

Thanks for your persistence. This thing is sad, but it is instructive. I suspect but cannot prove that DW might have had a latent desire from his youth, to hang with the "cool kids", and that resulted in his "Descent Into The Maelstrom" of slutbars. The problem is, there is no "sluttopia" - only diseased bodies and diseased minds. IOW, be true to yourself, if you were "chosen last" - or not chosen at all - by the likes of BvD, know that that's a good thing, not a bad thing. The "looking at nasty pictures is so evil, it's gotta be punished!", but adultery and drug use - hey, ain't nobody's business if they do" crowd continues to amaze me - I'd almost like to believe it's a "brilliantly conceived and flawlessly executed" psyop by a bunch of our enemies - DUbot ilk.

Don't think any of the blood found in the VD home was Danielle's or it was inconclusive.....except for the 2 left shirt cuffs.
The bean bag was Derek's blood...the blanket in her room, she could not be excluded...the stairway was animal....can't remember what the garage was deemed to be.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

In fact, the interview that Fres posted near the beginning of this thread is very instructive. The dictatorial father, the snarky mother. David won't even answer her letters sent to his jail. It's proof of nothing ... but just a piece of a puzzle.

Welcome back, Kim. How was that Cajun catfish dinner? I've been thinking about it since you mentioned it. ;-)

Yes-I agree...
Also, Isn't it strange that the ME released her body so soon. Well according to the prosecution the evidence that they had collected off of her, was still not back from their lab. I'm still wondering if that missing left foot will turn up somewhere. I seriously doubt that though, Because the city cleaned up that area on Dehesa Road just days after she was found. Just so that the community could create that memorial site that the family did not want. What's odd is how fast that was done!

I would love to hear what was found in Damon's SUV. Yup, me too. Of course, anything and everything found could be 'splained away: Blood evidence? Danielle was prone to nosebleeds. Layla blood? She was a doofus dog that ran into people's legs and busted herself up. Hair? Danielle usually romped with Layla in the van. Bodily fluids? After swimming (or gym or a day at the beach) Danielle would change in the van and was always getting in trouble for throwing her wet suit inside out on the vehicle's upholstery. Bloody fingerprints? Uh, Danielle picked her nose a lot and that's why she had nosebleeds. Left foot? That's just Damon's lucky keychain. Hairless Mexican Rabbit, I think. Any other questions? No? Okay, then I'm selling the van and buying a sparkly new BMW (now that we don't need so much room).
