Body found tied to sign
Man had been at party; official speaks of prank gone awry

GOLDSBORO - Out in the country, where they were from, folks might say that Tony Wayne Smith's friends and family were old enough to know better than to tie him to a signpost after a night of partying.

Smith died over the weekend after a prank that went bad, investigators say. They are awaiting results of an autopsy to determine whether charges will be filed.

Lt. George L. Raecher of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office said Smith's body was found by a motorist driving north along N.C. 111 about 9 a.m. Sunday. He was strapped to the post of a stop sign with household plastic wrap. His face was not covered.

Raecher would release few details about the incident, except to say that Smith had been partying with friends and relatives Saturday night or early Sunday and that someone at the gathering -- he would not say how many people were thought to be involved --decided to play a joke.

Raecher would not say how long Smith had been bound to the sign, located where sandy Mince Hill Road meets N.C. 111, when he was spotted by the passing motorist.

Investigators are awaiting the medical examiner's ruling on a cause of death, Raecher said.

Smith had not been shot, stabbed, beaten or otherwise injured, Raecher said. He said those who were party to the prank indicated they did not mean to hurt him.

When he was found, Smith was "partially laid over," still bound to the signpost, Raecher said. He would not say whether Smith was clothed.

Raecher would not say where the gathering was that Smith had been attending. He said Smith had been staying for about four weeks with relatives at a trailer on Mince Hill Road, about halfway between Goldsboro and the town of Seven Springs.

Onnie R. Herring, who has lived just down Mince Hill Road for more than 60 years, said that Smith's cousins lived in the trailer and that, ever since he was young, Smith had come to visit the area from his home in Gates, a small town near the Virginia border. Smith had other relatives in the area, including two of his three children, his father, a sister, three brothers and both of his grandmothers.

Family members did not want to discuss the incident Tuesday.

Herring said the cousins, some of whom grew up with her own five children, often gathered at the trailer, set between wide, green fields of corn and cotton in eastern Wayne County just south of the Neuse River.

"Wasn't a thing in the world wrong with that boy that I know of, or any of those kids, except they liked to drink," but they weren't alone in that, said Herring, who, at 87, considers everyone young.

"I could call on any one of them, any time, if I needed them, and they would have come right down here," she said. "They were all raised good."

Herring said that if the crowd ever caused any disturbance, she never heard it. Like many of her neighbors, Herring keeps her windows closed against the frequent roar of low-flying military jets on their way to and from nearby Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.

"When people are drinking, honey," Herring said, "you don't know what kind of foolish pranks they'll do."

We shaved a guys eyebrows once. Turns out that he had a family picture the next day and have to have a make-up lady draw eyebrows on his head.

I was going to post this earlier, somebody here at work told me about it. I think the operative words here are "trailer, set between wide, green fields of corn". That and I imagine a large amount of beer. 'Hey, y'all, TW's passed out. Let's go wrap him up to that stop sign up on the main road'

And for the record, I can say I was not involved and knew nothing beforehand. However I have knocked down a stop sign or 12 in the past

My prediction on the 'cause of death' is that he overheated from his bodies inability to dissapate heat due to being wraped in saran wrap.

My thought too. Probably never woke up. I'd think he could have clawed his way out unless his hands were bound.

Oh, boy. There is not enough time in the day (not to mention that I am busy as h@ll). We did more things to people that had passed out: markers, shaving cream, tape, bodily relocations, etc.

One dude got ink poisoning.

A good buddy of mine used to pass out in the middle of a party just like clockwork. We'd basically see him begin to sway and start cooking up a plan.

Another good friend if mine passed out on his own coach and woke up on it ... outside on his deck surrounded by the entire contents of his living room.

Fortunately, nothing went as bad as the article. On the other hand, I been both in the presence of and party to enough near misses (literally) with guns and alcohol that I promised myself not to get a handgun until I "grew up".

Quite a few mailboxes have been the victim of a good "yarding"

As a young teenager I lived in Western North Carolina. We did stupid stuff like that. When I was fourteen, my then-girlfriend and I woke up handcuffed together in the front yard of her house.

Obviously, we had a lot of ’splaining to do.

Or that he suffocated. That plastic wrap is called shrink wrap for a reason. When it heats up it shrinks

Not that I would do that, since messing with someone's mailbox is, uh, like, a federal offense.

I bet life long residents of NC can come up with some reports on pranks gone wrong that make this one seem tame.

PL, that comment seems awfully pointed!!

One memorable thing that happened to me was when I got really drunk the weekend after high school graduation.

We all went to Atlantic Beach and rented a block of hotel rooms.

My mistake was mixing tequila, beer, vodka and bourbon in the same night (I was 17, what can I say).
My friends laid me out in the hotel parking lot and drew a chalk line around me.
Then they put me in the fighting chair of a fishing boat parked in the lot and let me sleep there.

Reportedly pictures exist, but my friends say they are holding them until our 20 year class reunion. I still haven't seen 'em.

That's the only drunken prank story I have suitable for a family forum!

Oh, no not that I've ever done that or knew friends that drove around in the back of a pickup bashing mailboxes. No, I've never done that either. It would be against the law you know

I know pictures exist of me during a very very very drunken episode. I remember them being taken. I will not describe the incident in this forum. But my friend who took them and has them will not let me see them nor give them to me.

He likes to use them as a 'weapon' against me. Don't make me brake out those pictures of you!

While I don't have pictures of him for weapons, I have information on him. So we both try to keep each other in line with the 'weapons' we have against each other.

Both of us would be 'dead' if the stuff got into the wrong peoples hands so we like to have a little friendly back and forth with the stuff.

Or that he suffocated.

Yeah, my thought too. Or, given that he was "partly laid over" when found, may well have aspirated his own vomit. Not that it matters much - he was dumb, and his friends were dumber, and now he's dead.

Life is scary. What allows us to believe that this is ok. When do we become animals with others emotions and physical aspects. I hope no charges are brought cause you cant punish stupid people for stupid things.

Some are destined to have such fame if you allow you beliefs and ethics to be not by Gods Word. Treat yourself and others as a temple of God. Soo much saddness that I will never understand WHY this happens. I will pray for those involved and hope they come out of this better.

As the de facto interim President, I was hoping for a cool hat like Hamid Karzai:

However, I may have to settle for a Tin Foil version:
