Not even close. How on earth could Christians bring about the current state of the world to further the cause of prophecy?

What are you saying? Do you not believe that the Anti-Christ will one day rule over the world as the Bible predicts?

I hate to tell you, but it seems you don't know anything about scripture. God always provides a way for his people to get out of the way when he is about to punish a society.

In this case, there are too many Christians on earth who have too much influence for good. Once they are removed, Satan's man of the hour will have virtually no opposition.

Not only would a Christian act the same if the end of the world were tomorrow as if it were a million years from now, but it is faintly pagan to be trying to see the future and to be so concerned with exactly how much suffering we're going to have to endure. If you look at it in its best possible light, none of it matters, and in its worst, it keeps us from our proper focus and attentive to something essentially selfish and disputatious, and undermines our trust.

Place your gold in Heaven. Tell God you believe Christ died in your place on the cross so that your sins may all be washed away. When you say that, you will change your destiny from Hell, to Heaven. You will be given everlasting life, and a real and working relationship with God. He loves you more than your parents and family members, and he wants to be close to you to the point that he wants to fill you with his wonderful Holy Spirit.

The process of being forgiven for our sins is so simple that many men will reject it. Its your turn.

Fully 59% say they believe the events in Revelation are going to come true, and nearly one-quarter think the Bible predicted the Sept. 11 attack.

Yes, and before that they thought OKC was the trigger predicted in the Bible. And before that, Waco. And before that, the Cold War. Or Mount St. Helens. Or the Six-Day War in the Middle East. On and on and on.

I mean, i'm a Catholic so obviously my take on that whole section of the Bible is just a TOUCH different from that of hardcore fundamentalist Protestants, but whatever happened to "no one will know the time or place"? It always seemed to me that means as long as anyone, anywhere is saying "It's about to happen between X date and Y date, then the possibility of it happening at all is ZERO. No?

(Be gentle on me. I'm no biblical scholar by any means.)

What scares me the most is the so called " Christians " (that are IMO religious whacko's) who are taking matters into their own hands to MAKE IT HAPPEN! If God says it will happen ( in scripture) it WILL HAPPEN, without any human being bringing it about, without any mere mortal lifting one finger !

If there is one theme that is constant throughout all of recorded history it is that in every generation there has always been a certain amount of people that were just sure that the end of times was at hand. Just as they were sure that the current immorality of society was the beginning of the end.

But alas it never happened. The truth is that civilizations rise and civilizations fall. That is the reality of existence.

One of my favorite Christian book titles of all times was "Is Gorbachev the Antichrist?"

Er...no.

Seriously, though, great article. Not at all condescending, for a change, but thorough and well written.

Would you please name some names? Be very specific when you name the names of who these "whacko's" are.

You certainly have no case against any Bible Believers, but you must have some names of the specific people who have perverted the Bible.

It would also be good if you would show the specific verses they pervert to receive their motivation to do wrong.

The reason I bring this up is so that others do not get the wrong idea and think you mean any well-known right wing fundamentalists. Thanks

Why would someone come on FR, bash Christians, and cut-and-paste Time Magazine? We come to FR to get AWAY from bs like that.

The point of FR is not to sit around and only post articles from Christian publications. We post articles from ALL publications that we think are worthy of discussion, including (perhaps even ESPECIALLY) those articles that take a viewpoint far removed from the majority of FR members. It keeps us smarter, and better informed.

The books were enough to persuade Sandra Keathley, a Boeing employee in Wichita, Kans., not to buy Microsoft's Windows XP, because she has heard rumors that it carries a method of tracking e-mail.

Real Christians use Mac OS X! Unix forever!

The world ends on December 22, 2012... the date that the final invasion by the alien colonists takes place. Pray that we have enough vaccine against the black oil virus by then.

Pre-Trib Christians are obsessed and consequently deluded by this "Left Behind" baloney. I know some that wish not to fight the good fight, hoping to expedite the "End".

Hmmm.... I think Christians are looking for alternate form of worships than the usual day to day consumption. THey may be consuming that stuff, now, however, they are clearly understanding that this world worshiping sinful humans, calling them sinless, is leaving them behind, and, indeed, only in such situations can one seek purpose in such a doomed situation.

Not fight the good fight? Speed the end? Isn't that a better solution? To stop the war sooner, because a war is going on, clearly. Not just terrorism, but a war of those worshiping themselves against those refusing such worship and seeking such elsewhere. Clearly, we all want the war to stop before it even begins in earnest.
