The Neighborhood Bully
by Bob Dylan - 1983

Well, the neighborhood bully, he's just one man,
His enemies say he's on their land.
They got him outnumbered about a million to one,
He got no place to escape to, no place to run.
He's the neighborhood bully.

The neighborhood bully just lives to survive,
He's criticized and condemned for being alive.
He's not supposed to fight back, he's supposed to have thick skin,
He's supposed to lay down and die when his door is kicked in.
He's the neighborhood bully.

The neighborhood bully been driven out of every land,
He's wandered the earth an exiled man.
Seen his family scattered, his people hounded and torn,
He's always on trial for just being born.
He's the neighborhood bully.

Well, he knocked out a lynch mob, he was criticized,
Old women condemned him, said he should apologize.
Then he destroyed a bomb factory, nobody was glad.
The bombs were meant for him.
He was supposed to feel bad.
He's the neighborhood bully.

Well, the chances are against it and the odds are slim
That he'll live by the rules that the world makes for him,
'Cause there's a noose at his neck and a gun at his back
And a license to kill him is given out to every maniac.
 He's the neighborhood bully.

He got no allies to really speak of.
What he gets he must pay for, he don't get it out of love.
He buys obsolete weapons and he won't be denied
But no one sends flesh and blood to fight by his side.
He's the neighborhood bully.

Well, he's surrounded by pacifists who all want peace,
They pray for it nightly that the bloodshed must cease.
Now, they wouldn't hurt a fly.
To hurt one they would weep.
They lay and they wait for this bully to fall asleep.
He's the neighborhood bully.

Every empire that's enslaved him is gone,
Egypt and Rome, even the great Babylon.
He's made a garden of paradise in the desert sand,
In bed with nobody, under no one's command.
 He's the neighborhood bully.

Now his holiest books have been trampled upon,
No contract he signed was worth what it was written on.
He took the crumbs of the world and he turned it into wealth,
Took sickness and disease and he turned it into health.
He's the neighborhood bully.

What's anybody indebted to him for?
Nothin', they say.
He just likes to cause war.
Pride and prejudice and superstition indeed,
They wait for this bully like a dog waits to feed.
He's the neighborhood bully.

What has he done to wear so many scars?
Does he change the course of rivers?
Does he pollute the moon and stars?
Neighborhood bully, standing on the hill,
Running out the clock, time standing still,
Neighborhood bully.

Glad you have READ that, you for-sure can't understand him when he sings it.

Sounds like Jesse Jackson's diction coach, doesn't he? On top of that,if he has EVER hit a note,it was accidental. I've never understood how either he or Neil Young could ever be called "great singers" by ANYBODY. Sure, they are great songwriters, but neither one of them can sing a lick.

Awesome

Here is one of my favorites

The iron hand it ain't no match for the iron rod,

The strongest wall will crumble and fall to a mighty God.

For all those who have eyes and all those who have ears It is only He who can reduce me to tears.

Don't you cry and don't you die and don't you burn

For like a thief in the night, He'll replace wrong with right

When He returns.

Truth is an arrow and the gate is narrow that it passes through,

He unleashed His power at an unknown hour that no one knew.

How long can I listen to the lies of prejudice? How long can I stay drunk on fear out in the wilderness? Can I cast it aside, all this loyalty and this pride? Will I ever learn that there'll be no peace, that the war won't cease

Until He returns?

Surrender your crown on this blood-stained ground, take off your mask, He sees your deeds, He knows your needs even before you ask.

How long can you falsify and deny what is real?

How long can you hate yourself for the weakness you conceal?

Of every earthly plan that be known to man, He is unconcerned,

He's got plans of His own to set up His throne

When He returns.

His worst one was "The Hurricane." That song was instrumental in getting that vicious murderer released.

and his white supremecist mind goes Jew, Jew, Jew, they're all the same,

They ARE all Jews. So what? As for Dylan,I don't see where there are any connections between him and them other than the religion he was born into. He IS the Jew in that bunch that disproves that theory, though. I lived through the 60's,and don't remember seeing or hearing of Dylan leading any protest groups. Yeah, the anti-war "movement" stole his songs and used them for anthems, but Dylan is hardly responsible for other people doing this.

While we are on the subject, while it is true that the vast majority of the Jews with influence in this country were hard-core lefties back then who wanted a communist victory, the vast majority of the war protesters and draft-dodgers were white Christians whose main concern was that it wasn't THEIR asses getting blown away. Notice how all the war protests stopped dead in their tracks when they came out with the draft lottery?

I am curious about the whole thing regarding Dylan. Do you know anything about his politics or who he was influenced by?

Dylan came out of the folk music crowd, and his musical style was heavily influenced by people like Woody Guthrie and other old lefties from the 30's. When I say "lefties",this isn't just a opinion. Many were members of the CPUSA. Most of Dylans contemporaries of the time were hard lefties, too. Including Peter,Paul, and Mary, who are STILL hard lefties. None the less,Dylan always walked his own path, and you can't call him guilty by association. The "folkies" were horrified when he started playing a electric guitar, and started distancing themselves from him because of it. Despite all the rhetoric about being "progressive thinkers",there ain't nobody less open-minded or more anal than a leftie.

I'm not that big a fan, but here I am defending him anyway, against notheing, because he's a Christian with Jewish parents, and he's from Minnesota.

I THINK that it would be more accurate to say that he went back to his Jewish roots, but still has respect for the Christian religion. Or at least this is what I read several years ago.

Abstract:
Mein Kampf was originally translated in the 1960s, and revived by Bisan, a Lebanese publisher, in the 1990s. In the preface, translator Luis al-Haj states: "National socialism did not die with the death of its herald."

Now that the Venona transcripts are declassified and the KGB archives have been made public we know the Rosenbergs were even more guilty than thought.

Larry, that's just plain pathetic. The key words here are your own,"even more guilty than we THOUGHT". At the time Dylan wrote that song, the Verona transcripts were still classified, and nobody knew what was in them. Dylan grew up and was surrounded by people in a time and place where their innocence was a article of faith by a group of people who had just been through mass murder by a government. It doesn't take a great stretch to understand why the Jews of the 50's might have been just a TAD suspiscious of governments who put Jews to death without public exposure of all the evidence against them. This is even truer when it is a woman being executed, something rare back then.

Not being a big fan of his (can’t understand the words) I never thought of that, but you’re right, he wasn’t involved in protests, one of the few.

The lottery took the motivation away half of the “protesters”, and another 10%-20% who could hope their number wouldn’t be reached during a drawdown of forces (54, no hope for me).

They abandoned their “principles” when their personal risk disappeared. Of course and anti military attitude had to be maintained for a few decades, to clothe cowardice in principle.

Small world isn't it? Finnish socialists held summer festivals in Hibbing in the early part of the 20th century…Nah... lefties never apologizes for the damage they do. Forget the politics, forget the damage, he wrote such nice songs. Even better than Puff Daddy's.

Small, small world. Just think, Finnish socialists had a festival in Dylan’s hometown in 1914. And the town had a synagogue. The intrigue. What do you think was going on? Do you think that inspired his parents to inspire him to write a song about Julius and Ethel? (I’ve heard Bill and Hill is in the works as we speak).I don’t know much about Dylan, please, please explain how these thing are important.

What damage has Dylan done to America? Is he still causing damage? What does he need to apologize for?

Enquiring minds (you have one) want to know.

PS Thank you for helping make this a very entertaining thread

Another poster mentioned that too. About all I know of his background is what I've read on this thread.

The left knew Hiss and the Rosenbergs were guilty as sin. They just didn't care. Enough evidence was presented to nail the Rosenbergs. Both could have avoided the death penalty had they informed on their CPUSA buddies. The govenment was amazed they did not. Everyone thought their children would mean more to them than the Communist Party and Stalin.

Dylan wrote those lyrics defending the traitors and bashing the USA in 1983. Right when Reagan was building up to break the Soviet Empire. The same year 220 US Marines were killed in a suicide attack in Lebanon. Those Marines were in the area to save Jewish lives. And Bob Dylan says the US government executed two Jews without evidence. Bet that comforted the 220 families of the US Marines who died.

Bob Dylan should be ashamed of himself. And so should those who make excuses for his politics because they like his pretty music.

The lunatic is the person who wrote lyrics bashing the United States of America and defending two traitors when America troops lives were at stake around the world.

Considering the millions of dollars Bob Dylan has made in America, you would think he could say something good about the country. A thank you to Reagan for his role in busting the Soviet Union and liberating hundreds of thousands of Jews to travel freely might be nice.

But no, he'll never say that. He'll bitch about the great injustices in America which were not injustices at all.

Watch it or I shall start quoting.

Well, some of its power is actually IN the language, but still - it makes it sort of a slow read. I wish he could have tried to do it without the 17th (or is it 16th ?) century flavour. Of course, simply translating it to current English would do no good at all.

But anything Hodgson wrote is great. Had my first brush with him a loooong time ago, with the Carnacki stories :).

I doubt the families knew of the song.

Your bigotry and ignorance becomes particularly offensive when mixed with the military.

From what I recall, after months of border attacks (under an American brokered "peace treaty") Israel invaded Lebanon.

At the time Israel had a joint Syrian and PLO force surrounded in Beirut for three or four months. The US did not want to see those the Syrian and PLO forces destroyed, so a settlement was reached whereby the Syrian and PLO forces were evacuated from Beirut and an “international force”, read Marines, would take over security to assure attacks on Israel would cease.Israel withdrew. The attacks continued, now on the "international force" as well.

It was a misguided mission with faulty rules of engagement. American troops should never be peacekeepers, especially when there is no peace to keep. Syrians and Palestinians lived, American’s and, over the years, Jews died.

Hopefully “peacekeepers” are a mistake we won’t make again.
