Southwest Airlines will start charging larger passengers for two seats on its 2,800 daily flights starting June 26.

The airline, which operates out of 58 U.S. cities and is the largest carrier at Baltimore-Washington International Airport, will begin charging "persons of size" for two seats if they think they may not fit comfortably in one.

I don't see where the 'punishment' is.

Which may explain your knack at showing your ignorance when it comes to overweight people.

Please don't take this the wrong way...I am truly curious, What does your struggle consist of?

My 2 cents, i'm 6'4 and i'm ok with airline seats until the person decides to put thier seat back........*crunch*

"They think they can get away with it because they think discriminating against people on the basis of weight will be acceptable to most of the population," she said.

Yet another reason to avoid flying, whether you're fat or thin.

If such is SowNest's view, it is amazingly and laughably short-sighted and stupid, given that the US already is a nation of lard-asses, with some 30% of our population seriously overweight or obese. And, by all accounts, that percentage is growing day by day as so many Americans continue to sit on their fat asses and allow themselves to be "super-sized" by MacDonald's and all of the other whorish purveyors of slop.

I can't wait to see the geniuses who formulated this policy for SowNest Airlines eating crow -- and deep-fried crow at that....

I looked at the pair and thought "jack sprat could eat no fat, his wife could eat no lean" ... I kid you not.

Dang, did you and I actually fly together?

I will say this once again: GET LARGER SEATS!

Even if I am that skinny guy, I am sick and tired of being treated like cattle. For the last 6 years, each and every time I walk into an airline, I MOOO....

I am old enough to remember when you would dress up all fancy for an airline flight, and the passengers were treated with respect.

I'm living proof that losing weight is easy.

And Oprah Winfrey is living proof losing weight is not.

You just have to have the desire to do it.

Fine. How about keeping it off? Will you be able to say the same in six months?

If you make an airline haul that person around at no extra cost, in a business where paid seat occupancy rates are EVERYTHING, how are you not penalizing the business?

Seat occupancy rates aren't everything BUT if the airline doesn't charge for the second seat, they lose that revenue - plain and simple.

If one person requires two seats to be transported from location A to location B, but is only charged for 1 seat, then the airline loses that revenue from the second seat.

**Which may explain your knack at showing your ignorance when it comes to overweight people.**

Ignorance? Wow...that's a stretch.

I'm overweight. Not to the point of requiring 2 seats...but overweight.

If an airline has three seats on one side of the aisle and a larger person requires 2 of those seats, why should the airline not require $ for the second seat?

6-3, 240 is not a lardass; I'm not carrying more than five or six extra pounds around. The size model of the human race which airlines are using is simply wrong and that's just one more thing which could lead to the end of air traffic as we've known it. I could easily name a dozen others.

If they have to lift the arm to sit in the seat they should buy another ticket.

Cool!

If one person requires two seats to be transported from location A to location B, but is only charged for 1 seat, then the airline loses that revenue from the second seat.

Note to airlines: Charge EVERYONE tripple prices.

Sir, your argument is ONLY valid if a fat person displaces another passenger and they were not allowed to fly. An empty seat does not cost the airline a single additional penny.

The solution to this problem was rather easy. Install larger seats!

I would have no problem with Southwest offering plus-size seats. In fact, they could make it a competitive advantage. Put it right there on their reservation website: "Are you a plus-size person? Southwest offers seats that are 40% wider for those who need more room."

Of course, I would expect a seat that's 40% wider to cost a 40% premium also.

>>One of the worst flights I can remember was being stuck in the middle seat between two people who each required a seat belt extender to buckle the belt around their middle

Had one of those myself --- but it was a USAir "direct flight" with three stops - seemed like it would never end.

**6-3, 240 **

Seems to be a healthy weight for your frame, imo.

Unbelievable. Here we are, a nation under attack with its airways threatened and so many people here are worried about sitting next to a fat person for a couple of hours. Oh, the humanity!!

The "lard-ass community" to which you refer is not a mere subset of American society. And soon it will have become anything but a minority, so The Proud, The Thin, The Self-Righteous!! (present company not included, I'm sure) will just have to get used to it, as I have many years and miles ago...

(BTW, it should be noted that fat people make great shields....)

I suggest that the airlines replace two or more rows of seats and replace them with benches like on a school bus. The fat people can sit there and everyone will be happy.

And being jammed into my seat, unable to exert my warrior skills to slay the enemies of freedom, because that lardass has blocked all access to the aisle.
