Thank you Bunny and Jen for this thread and COB for posting that picture and the Marine Corps Hymn. It has brought to mind the many times our family went to Marine Barracks at Eighth and Eye in DC, when my dad was stationed in Washington, to watch "The President's Own" - the Marine Corps Band, the Drum and Bugle Corps and the Drill Team perform. They performed for the Commandant every Friday. I don't know if they still do now, but The Drum and Bugle Corps used to play every Thursday evening at the Statue of Iwo Jima.

Our next door neighbor played the bugle in the Drum and Bugle Corps and told us that they would all ride standing up in the bus to the parade field before performing so as not to ruin the crease in their pants. These men were spit-shinned and polished to perfection and the music they played would give you chills.

I remember being amazed to hear that one evening a Marine was accidentally stabbed in the back with a bayonet during the Drill Team performance. He continued through the rest of the performance. No one knew he had been badly injured until after the routine was over. I was told, "a Marine does not fall".

The United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps are known as "The Commandant's Own". This picture is linked to their website where there are more photos.
