Atheists Protest Ground Zero Cross

Decry plan to use symbol as part of 9-11 memorial

:

The organization American Atheists is protesting a proposal to use a large steel cross found in the rubble of the World Trade Center in a memorial to victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Describing itself as a "nationwide movement which defends the civil rights of nonbelievers," the group said in a statement yesterday that use of the cross in a government-funded monument "would violate the separation of church and state, be insensitive to those victims who had no religious beliefs and would incredibly pay homage to religion – the prime motivating factor in the faith-based attack of Sept. 11."

The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation is the local agency in charge of planning for the rebuilding of the site.

Ed Malloy, president of the Building and Construction Trades Council and a board member of the agency, has asked that the cross be made a permanent part of any future memorial.

According to the New York Daily News, construction workers, firefighters, police officers and family members have held weekly Sunday services at the site of the cross since Sept. 11.

"We're hoping it will stay right where it is and become part of any permanent memorial," Malloy was quoted as saying in the Daily News.

Ellen Johnson, president of American Atheists objects to the possibility that the cross might be used in a taxpayer-supported project.

"This is an inappropriate use of taxpayer money," she said in the statement, "You can't take government funds to promote religion, especially sectarian religion in the form of a cross or any other religious symbol."

Johnson added that any memorial to the victims of the attacks "should bring Americans together, not divide them on the basis or religion or anything else."

Ron Barrier, national spokesman for the group, stressed that Muslims, Hindus and other non-Christians were killed in the attacks as well.

What about them? he asked. "Are we going to turn the site of the WTC into a religious shrine with competing religious slogans, symbols and displays? Any monument to the victims, and those who helped in the aftermath of Sept. 11 should be tasteful, as well as a unifying statement about America and humanity.

"Christian symbols are as inappropriate as a Muslim crescent or some other religious label," Barrier said.

Construction worker Frank Silecchia happened upon the perfectly symmetrical cross in the midst of the WTC wreckage just a few days after the attacks. It was standing straight, 20-feet high, surrounded by many smaller crosses.

"When I first saw it, it took my heart," Silecchia said. "It helped me heal the burden of my despair, and gave me closure on the whole catastrophe."

Said WorldNetDaily columnist Ann Coulter in an October column : "The cross at Ground Zero was not simply the cross beams remaining from an existing building. It was formed out of beams from Building One plunging, splitting and crashing into Building Six."

"There's no symmetry to anything down there," an FBI chaplain said at the time, "except those crosses."

Johnson said that her group would go to court if necessary to challenge the use of government money for the placement of any religious symbol at the WTC site.

Ellen probably thinks chopping babies up in the womb is an appropriate use of taxpayer's dollars. So to Ellen and people like her, I say, "I don't care what you think anymore". Time to do what we want. Over the objections of sniveling little ingrates like Ellen.

So okay, the atheists or whatever can fight this on government money being spent on the memorial. Well, hows about contributions from private citizens to keep the cross in an area funded by private citizens? We have a few people in government that might make this happen. The cross should stay there, there can be no argument about that. It has been a strength and enduring symbol to those who worked there daily.

When did I claim to be offended? I'm just stating that your grammatically questionable assertions that every religion other than Christianity is demonic sounds no better than American Atheists whining about a something that resembles a religious symbol appearing on what might be public land.

Offended? You come in, loudly assert the "truth" of your position without evidence and then attack several other religions, using ALL CAPS as though that somehow adds to the validity of your argument and I'm supposed to be offended? I'm amused that you think that your constant assertions that "JESUS IS ALIVE FOREVERMORE!!!!!!" proves anything, but I'm certainly not offended.

If you have a logical argument against AA's position, make it. Jumping up and down and yelling "Shut up! We're a Christian nation!" makes you sound like just as much of a whiny brat as those you decry.

I guess yelling at the top of your lungs makes everything you say become true.

Note to the athiests: That particular phrase does not appear anywhere in the US Constitution.

That is awesome. Thanks for posting the picture. I'd never seen it before. I agree the cross should stay exactly as it is.

You should see the original picure as it was found in the rubble.

Someone posted it on the origial FR thread when it was discovered, there is a huge pile of smoky rubble and the cross is STANDING UPRIGHT on the pile with the sunrise shining through at dawn of the third day after 9/11-just incredible

I was giving an observational description of (modern Western) atheistic piety. Christianity admits a minimalist description, too, as a certain collection of beliefs, but observationally, Christians pray.

The difference is that protesting government involvement in religion (whether real or imagined) is not a "tenet" of atheism. Atheists who gather together as a collective for such matters may do so because they share a common philosophy, but the philisophy that tells them to protest such matters is an issue seperate from their atheism. Atheism is a non-event, it is to religion like baldness is to hair colour or barefoot is to shoes.

Al Qaeda indulges in one form of religious terrorism, in order to force the entire world to convert to their faith...this is just another form of religious terrorism...to force the world to convert to her LACK of it.

That cross became the symbol of the 9-11 atrocity at the WTC within weeks of the attack. It is now an internationally recognized piece of history in association with 9-11, as is the pic of the firefighters hoisting the flag. As such, these two pieces of AMERICAN HISTORY must be equally preserved in any memorial, regardless of the demands of wacko religious groups...and ANTI religious groups.

If it comes to it...I say we put it to a vote on November's ballot. We'll see who wins: the will of the people, or the will of yet another quasi-religious wacko group.
