SACRAMENTO - Bedeviled by a budget crunch and besieged by fund-raising questions, Gov. Gray Davis' campaign for re-election has gone on the attack.
But political experts question whether the first negative TV ads produced by Davis against his opponent, GOP businessman Bill Simon Jr., will do much good.

and Simon is still out of step with Californians on many issues." "What does that mean? I don't even know what they hell that means!" (Jack Burton)
Seriously, I hear this phrase all of the time (almost always out of demoSTUPIDs mouths), but they never actually spell out what it is. Typical liberal BS!

I live in CA. I don't think this is a conservative/liberal issue in this race. I think Davis has been a very poor, lackluster governor. If he wins it's because Simon LOST. Davis' main activity has been to shake down...I mean...approach businesses for huge campaign contributions. What has been working in his favor is increasing evidence that YES the California skyhigh electrity/energy prices WERE tinkered with by outside forces, especially Enron. If not for that he would be a shoo in. There really seems to be little love between Davis and most voters, even those who vote Democratic. It's for that reason that he'll try to paint Simon as someone belonging to the far right wing. Bottom line: a very boring, bordering-on-incompetent governor. And this is NOT said from a "conservative/liberal" perspective. MY BET: MAY lose...but Simon cannot take anything for granted.

""I think the campaign has given up on getting people to like Gray," said one prominent Democratic strategist who did not want to be named. "Now they just don't want people to like Bill Simon either." Tony Quinn, co-editor of the California Target Book, who once advised Republican candidates, sees signs of Davis' Democratic base cracking."Yep Grayout is loathed by many 'Rats I've spoken to and this confirms the anecdotal evidence. His negatives are huge and will remain the same. I do hope Simon has some experienced advisors. Grayout is counting on his cash and the 'Rat machine to turn out the fraud, er, vote.....

Good analysis. It's easy to categorize in black-white (liberal/conservative) and than gray (no pun intended). As for personality, Davis does have the charisma of a bowl of oatmeal. Hope the Reagan-like Democrats get disenchanted. Probably why Gray Davis got elected was 16 previous years of Republican governors that up to that time didn't seem to solve many serious problems.

Gray, very gray, Davis is one of the most mean-spirited corrupt politicians the state of CA has ever seen. As I told some of you, he was fudging the books as Controller. He would selectively pick audits making certain to ignore the counties that needed to be reviewed. His staff thought he was a jerk.
His eyes were always on the prize, and again, he thinks he is headed for the Presidency, but even his dem contributors are fleeing.

Like Roger Hedgecock says,
"Grey Davis is the worst governor of all time!"

I'd like to second that motion.

But what is novel, Russo said, is the exceptionally poor job ratings voters give Davis. Russo gathered 12 focus groups two weeks ago to gauge Davis' support. Out of the 100 people interviewed, not a single one agreed with all of the following statements: that he or she likes Davis; thinks he's doing a good job; and plan to vote for him.Go Simon!

The growing perception that the governor's policy decisions are for sale to the largest contributors to his campaign coffers is turning off Democrats, especially liberals, Quinn saidI need to smoke some of this guy's stash.

Permit me to dream. Are we seeing a trend here? Recent election in France and Holland have seen right wing parties returned and left wing parties tossed out. In France it wasn't neccessarily a huge turn to the right wing but the left was so dispirited it stayed home. Is the same thing going to happen in California? Davis has is such a negative character, maybe even some of the liberals can't bring themselves to vote for him.

Bruce Cain is overpaid as an analyst. GraYouT IS Toast and he did it all by himself.

In one corner we have Gray Davis, punching himself in the face over and over. In the other corner we have Bill Simon looking for help to lace up his gloves. What is Bill Simon doing to get his message out? What is his message, other than "I'm not Gray Davis"?
To: Angelique; all
Gray, very gray, Davis is one of the most mean-spirited corrupt politicians the state of CA has ever seen Don't forget that he has physically assaulted staff members -- usually women. He is sick.
I bet you didn't know that there is an offical Davis for Governor Theme Song

I hope Simon is just biding his time while the country is distracted by terrorism in Washington (read the Senate). Davis is his own worst enemy right now, and when your opponent is self-destructing, don't do anything to help him.
I'm sure Simon is going to perk up in a few months and rehash all of this in a way that the Democrats won't be able to play the "it's old news" game. If he attacks now (while Davis is doing it for him), he shoots his ammo now and the Dems can play the old-news game later.
