U. of I. Journalism Dept.: 'Finder's Guide to Deep Throat'

As the 30th anniversary of Watergate nears, student investigators at the University of Illinois have concluded that Deep Throat, the White House source who helped journalists unravel the greatest political scandal in American history, was most likely conservative commentator Pat Buchanan.

I thought that this article was quite interesting and that these students may be correct in their findings. It makes Pat Buchanan not only a more interesting person, but it would also causes me to respect him more, if this were the truth.

These students are obviously not "correct in their findings" nor are they even trying to be. But they're having fun which is pretty much their job.

Interesting that you say that. Evidence to the contrary? I thought their final list of possibilities was reasonably plausible. But, then, I read the entire article.

You gotta be kidding me Buchanan is a socialist and Nixon's impeachment was just a coup d'tat by the radical left. It was revenge for Nixon and Kissinger's destruction of the communist alliance. Nixon did do many liberal thing but congress at the time was radical leftist by a veto proof margin( Bush does not have that excuse).

In addition to Buchanan, other likely candidates are speechwriter David Gergen, now a prominent journalist; White House attorney Jonathan Rose; head speechwriter Raymond Price; Stephen Bull, administrative assistant to President Richard Nixon; Fred Fielding, assistant to White House counsel John Dean; and Gerald Warren, deputy press secretary.

Names that were so everyday, yesterday.

The article was written based on the Dateline show last night. I could fill WarrenC in on the details but I suppose it's obvious that he's only interested in details that will further support his pre-defined outcome.

I don't think Deep Throat ever really existed, except in Woodstein's collective imagination.

It seems unlikely that there ever was such a person as "Deep Throat." It was a clever publicity ploy, which added some titillation to Woodward & Bernstein's campaign to discredit Nixon, at the behest of Katherine Graham and the Powers that Be of that time.

No doubt there were informers who leaked various bits of information. But if you actually look at what "Watergate" was, there was no major information to be leaked, because the whole campaign was virtually empty of facts. That's why Nixon was unable to fight back, because there was little or nothing to fight back against or deny, except that every liberal reporter and every Democratic policitian in the country was screaming his head off every day in banner headlines and furious talking-heads about Tricky Dick and Watergate--whatever Watergate was.

A second-rate burglary, in response to Democrat dirty tricks? The fact that Nixon swore like a trooper in private conversations? The fact that Nixon talked about misusing an FBI file--but refrained from doing so? The fact that Nixon had five o'clock shadow and was easily charicatured as sinister-looking? The fact that he was a Republican at a time when the left was prominent in high places, and they were furious that he was re-elected? The fact that he had been a Communist-hunter in earlier days?

No, there was early speculation that Deep Throat was nothing but a fiction, and that's the likeliest theory of any. Because for the most part Watergate itself was nothing but a fiction--just like the recent Enron campaign or the "What did Bush know and when did he know it?" campaign. Sure, things happened, but the press twisted them out of all recognition. The only difference is that with Watergate the left succeeded, but so far the two back-to-back anti-Bush propaganda campaigns have failed.

I believe the accusers have the responsibility to provide the evidence. The closest they can come to that is to call Buchanan a "complicated personality". Yeh - that must be it - Patrick Buchanan is just such a complicated personality.

You know, it's very possible. There were many conservatives who wanted to see Nixon bite the dust(and rightly so) for his China policy.

I don't picture Pat being able to let this excellent publicity tool remain unused for this long. Especially after running for president during that time.

If nothing else he could have had the information 'leaked' and then adamantly refused to discuss it.

I say that it was William Safire who was also a speechwriter for Nixon at the time.The reason:maybe Safire overheard some of Nixon's anti-Semetic comments and decided to pull the plug on him.

Or a means of disseminating information from a bugged and wiretapped White House, most likely by either the FBI or as a military intelligence operation by Naval Security Group's Task Force 157.
