Muslim Community Speaks Out
WTLV-12 ^ | 06/14/02 | WTLV-12

JACKSONVILLE, FL - After maintaining silence for several days the local Muslim community is finally speaking out about the controversy created by Reverend Jerry Vines earlier in the week at the Southern Baptist Convention.

Islamic Center President Shakur Bolden addressed the public Friday in an attempt to undo the damage done to the Muslim community. Bolden began by asking his followers "How can one be demon possessed and tell us to live in peace and harmony? Is that a demon possessed person?"

The questions he asked stemmed from the comments made by Reverend Jerry Vines. Said Vines, "Islam was founded by Mohammed, a demon-possessed pedophile who had 12 wives and his last one was a 9 year old girl."

In his sermon before a packed mosque, Bolden took special aim not so much at the words Vines used by Vines but at the ignorance that fueled them. He chastised Vines for speaking about a culture he knows little of and perhaps for knowing even less of his own.

Said Bolden, "If we were even to read the history of our country, the United States of America, we would find that up to a hundred years ago, marriage was legal at the age of ten."

In addition to addressing followers of the Muslim faith on Friday, a full page ad will run in the Florida Times Union on Saturday and will feature a letter from Bolden to the Reverend Vines. The letter talks about how offensive Vines' language was to all Muslims and asks him to clear the air by meeting with Bolden.

Muslims say that they are concerned about the damage that could be done from the comments that the Reverend made. Tahirah Abdullah said, "I wish he had been a little bit more sensitive in the words that he used. I think pedophile is a strong word. I don't know why he did that but I hope he learns." Hafez Assali added, "We hope everyone understands to respect to one another and not to rush to a quick judgment."

In the meantime, Reverend Jerry Vines is preparing to speak to his congregation for the first time since he made the controversial comments, this Sunday. You can watch Vines' sermon live Sunday at 10:30am on WTLV12.

I am a busy pastor. I am responsible for the spiritual welfare of over 25,000 members. I do not have much time to attend meetings, appear on TV programs, or do extensive interviews. I have no plans to speak to this matter further.

With all due respect for the Pastor, I did predict he'd back off. Let's see what happens next, if anything.

I do like the way he absolves the innocent and points out the key parts of the scripture in question, not to mention the invitation for correction!

Thanks for getting back to me.

Everything produces terrorists. There is nothing special about Islam in that regard.

That's got to be the most ignorant, counter-intuitive, head-in-the-sand comment ever made on FR. Congratulations.

So he didn't actually deny anything that Vines said but excused it because everybody else is doing it so why can't we.

Bolden began by asking his followers "How can one be demon possessed and tell us to live in peace and harmony?

Same way he said to kill the Jews?

Is that a demon possessed person?"

Yes.

I note that he doesn't refute a word of the analysis - he just attacks the messenger. How islamic.

I sure hope the Baptists hold their guns up on this one. Truth is truth. If it's too politically incorrect for the thought police, too bad!!

We seem to be the only ones willing to state that the emperor indeed has no clothes. Every other Christian leader has pretty much stayed silent or even condemned us for saying it. Even the Jews have been pretty silent, which is odd considering they should know better than anyone the true nature of Islam.

Vines won't apologize, because he knows he'll be supported by our community, but it would be nice if other Christians supported us as well. They know the truth just as well as we do, only they're afraid to speak out.

Exactly. If a Muslim were now to attack a Baptist Church, every article to cover it would constantly remind us of what Vines and other Baptist leaders said of Islam. But when an Arab Mosque is vandalized (as earlier this week) we never hear about the 3,000 dead at the WTC and the millions of Christians killed in the name of Islam.

If you give these rednecks like Vines enough rope, they'll hang themselves, anyway.

Did Vines actually say anything that was incorrect?

Actually, ignorance and hatred are the enemy. That's true whether you're an illiterate Muslim fanatic or a slick-haired Southern Baptist redneck preacher.

You know, we Baptists aren't very popular in the media right now because we're the only ones willing to tell the truth. I figure if we would've just crashed a plane into a building and killed thousands of people, everyone would be fawning over what a peaceful religion we had.

Islam is not above criticism, but to call Mohammed a demon possessed pedophile is a subjective comment, incendiary, and achieves no useful purpose.

Uhhh...
What part of that isn't true?

Perhaps, then, you can educate this neanderthal.

Can you give me some examples of "moderate" Islam? Name a "moderate" Islamic country. What has the Islamic world contributed to the advancement of mandkind?

I'll wait.

Wait! It just dawned on me! Your sympathy for Islam is based on a common denominator with your own made-up religion: you like the polygamy thing, right?

No one has said that all muslims are terrorists.

No, but I'll say this: Every muslim is a potential terrorist.

The next proposal to come out of The White House will be to build the nice muslims homes close to their mosques so they'll be happy and well adjusted. This will be added, of course, to the grants to be given by the federales to the 40,000 poor folks who don't have a down-payment for a new home.

Vines' comments were execrable. Islam is not above criticism, but to call Mohammed a demon possessed pedophile is a subjective comment, incendiary, and achieves no useful purpose.

Subjective? Married a six year old and consumated the relationship at age nine? If you don't call it pedophilia, what do you call it?

It certainly seems logical that Mohammed would have been possessed considering the violent nature of his teachings. Regardless, the Hadith indicates that Mohammed considered himself to be under demonic influence. (see #2)

It's time to clear the air regarding this religion. Let the debate begin.

There is some dispute as to whether and when the marriage was consummated. Perhaps someone can find the relevant text to resolve this matter one way or the other. Not that it matters to me. I am more interested in what Islam is about today, not then, and I think it should be judged on that basis. I don't think Christianity would like to be judged based on events prior say prior to 1700.

Bottom line - - the truth is still a defense against accusations of slander, and if the Muslim mouthpieces really want to "get into it" they will have large doses of what their own holy books contain thrown back in their faces. This should be an interesting dialogue.

Well said brother. We should have nothing to fear from the truth.

And congratulations in overcoming your upbringing.

This is in stark contrast to Christianity where one receives eternal life as a gift from God through faith in Jesus Christ.

Certain knowledge of salvation? Then why was Paul working out his salvation in fear and trembling?
