Rent and medical care, here in Gotham, are off the top of the chart. Neither are luxuries.
Well, there's your problem. My old 1-bedroom apartment cost $320 a month, furnished, with water included.
Slightly slummy 1-br non-doorman walkups on so-so blocks are $1700/month.
Doorman (necessary for security) 1-br in decent building on good block: $2400++.
A lot depends not on finances, but on, for lack of a better phrase, "where your head is".
Location, location, location.
Is what I was trying to say, is they both learned the value of hard work. They learned to work, AND take care of their money.
My daugther and I went to work on a ranch exercising horses when she was 14 after we sold the trash business. We split the salary. She saved and paid for a 3yr old F150 before she got her license at 16. I made her divide her part of the salary into 3 catagories. Money she could spend immeditatly, short term savings (paid for the truck with this) and long term. Saved for downpayment on a house. She still budgets her money this way and is doing great.

The possiilities were: earn it, marry it, steal it, inherit it.
They earned it.
