I'm guessing the cost of basic necessities as compared to income before taxes is not close to being the highest ever.

Rent and medical care, here in Gotham, are off the top of the chart. Neither are luxuries.

Well, there's your problem. My old 1-bedroom apartment cost $320 a month, furnished, with water included.

Well, New York is my home.

Slightly slummy 1-br non-doorman walkups on so-so blocks are $1700/month.

Doorman (necessary for security) 1-br in decent building on good block: $2400++.

Personally, after college, I chose to live in a noisy, stinky, walk-up rather than live with my parents, even though I was poor and in debt.

A lot depends not on finances, but on, for lack of a better phrase, "where your head is".

Location, location, location.

We know a couple (in their fifties) moved in with his mother after their children left home because the mother can no longer drive or do many other things and has a large home. They enjoy each others company -- the mother is a pleasant person and whenever they go on a trip she looks after their pets.

I read my post and it did not really answer your question, it was just mother bragging, sorry:)

Is what I was trying to say, is they both learned the value of hard work. They learned to work, AND take care of their money.

My daugther and I went to work on a ranch exercising horses when she was 14 after we sold the trash business. We split the salary. She saved and paid for a 3yr old F150 before she got her license at 16. I made her divide her part of the salary into 3 catagories. Money she could spend immeditatly, short term savings (paid for the truck with this) and long term. Saved for downpayment on a house. She still budgets her money this way and is doing great.

Actually, you did answer my question.

The possiilities were: earn it, marry it, steal it, inherit it.

They earned it.
