Two UCI scientists who helped convince the White House that global warming is real and largely manmade expressed surprise Monday that the Bush administration is calling for people to adapt to the potentially severe consequences to Earth rather than deal with the causes of the problem.

This is great: The EPA's motto should be "Extracting money based on the unknown".

The problem we have is separating the real data from the agenda-driven data, and I am sorry to say that there are those on the right who follow the same modus operandi.

Here is an example: the NOAA site shows compiled data in graph form that indicates the the earth is, in fact, warming. They have lots of useful information. The graphs showing warming are compiled from satellite data, thermometer readings, tree rings, and cores taken in glaciers.

On another site I found a statement that tree ring data is unreliable, citing various reasons.

Now the question is, what would the graphs look like if the tree ring data was removed? Would it show less warming or more? Does the tree ring data skew the results? Or, is tree ring data actually reliable and the critic was pushing his own agenda?

Additionally, Amelia pointed out that temperature readings are often taken at airports, which have no trees and which are surrounding by thousands and thousands of square feet of asphalt and consrete, making the temperature readings higher in both summer and winter. What if we look at the temperature data only from small towns and national forests and parks? Is the trend the same, or do the urban readings skew the data?

This is why this is so difficult to decipher. I have been cruising around the net trying to find out the truth, and there is very little information that hasn't been politicized.

Politicization of science is a very dangerous game that both sides are playiing. I disagree with it when the envirals do it, and I do not want to see conservatives do it either.

You are right target here: Bush will simply present the question of "adapt with new technology, or do it their way and destroy the economy," and the Dems will be TOAST.

The ones who are 24/7 enviral whackos will never vote for GW, Simon or any conservative. Nor have they voted for a conservative for decades in Kaliland.

Those non enviral whackos, who like to think that they are for clean water, green trees and healthy fish will say, "Good GW is handling this Global Warming thing that I don't understand!"

This will cost the Rats more votes in Kali. Their own recent Field Poll showed that GW would beat Goron if an election was held today due to the change over of the soccer moms who trust GW to keep their children alive versus a rat. Massive swings by Jewish Americans who agree with what was done in Israel with GW winking at Sharon while Sharon took out a lot of PA Garbage and stacked it on the curb for disposal. GW is starting to pick up the Mexican American voting citizens who work, own homes, pay taxes and are family and religion centered. Then, he is having an impact with the small but positive change of Black Americans going with GW since 9/11.

Now he can take away a lot of the non whacko enviro vote from the rats here in California.

Does anyone out there realize what California voting for GW in 2004 means?

I know that these new people knocking at our doors are not constitutional scholars, they don't represent any so called core group which hates all new comers, they may have voted rat in the past two to three elections. However, I'm very glad to see them knocking at our doors and wanting to support GW. They can learn more of the conservative logic as they do down the right side of the road of life with us as their mentors not their haters!

Here is a news piece from UCI:

UCI Chancellor receives prestigious Revelle Medal
for outstanding achievement in atmospheric research

Chancellor Ralph J. CiceroneIrvine, Calif., Feb. 25, 2002 — UC Irvine Chancellor Ralph J. Cicerone, one of the world's leading experts on global warming and climate change research, has received the 2002 Roger Revelle Medal of the American Geophysical Union, the world's largest society of Earth scientists.

The Daniel G. Aldrich Jr. Chair of Earth System Science and professor of chemistry at UCI, Cicerone is a highly respected atmospheric chemist whose research on methane, nitrous oxide and many other chemicals has made a significant impact on the understanding of how these chemicals affect the planet's energy balance and temperature.

The prestigious Revelle Medal recognizes outstanding accomplishments and contributions toward the understanding of the Earth's atmospheric processes, and is given to researchers who have made a lasting impact in the field of Earth science. Cicerone is the second UC Irvine researcher to receive the medal. Atmospheric chemist F. Sherwood Rowland, who received the Nobel Prize for his findings on how chlorofluorocarbons help destroy the Earth's protective ozone layer, earned the honor in 1994.

"I'm very proud of the opportunities I've had to make contributions to national and international science policy," Cicerone said. "I'm especially proud to receive this distinguished medal because it honors not just the work of one individual but reflects the entire university's achievements in atmospheric, oceanic and climate science."

Cicerone is one of the few atmospheric scientists who have made an extraordinary breadth of contributions to understanding biochemical cycles and their effect on climate. In the 1970s, his research on the Space Shuttle found that exhaust from certain rockets could damage the ozone layer by emitting hydrogen chloride into the stratosphere. His work on greenhouse gas emissions also influenced the 1987 Montreal Protocol, an international treaty establishing a timetable for replacing production of ozone-destroying chemicals with safer substitutes. He currently conducts research on the emission of methane and methyl halide gases from rice paddies.

In addition, Cicerone has played significant roles in scientific policy, both as president of AGU and most recently as the chair of the National Academy of Sciences committee that reported last June to the White House on the science of climate change.

Cicerone came to UCI in 1989 from the National Center for Atmospheric Studies in Boulder, Colo., where he directed the Atmospheric Chemistry Division. He is founding chair of UCI's Department of Earth System Science, which has gained international attention as one of the few programs in the nation devoted to studying global environmental threats to the air, Earth and sea. Based on the importance of Earth system science faculty research, the Institute for Scientific Information cited UCI as the university with the greatest impact on geoscience research in the mid-'90s.

Cicerone became the dean of UCI's School of Physical Sciences in 1994, and in 1998, he was named the university's fourth chancellor.

In 1997, the atmospheric scientist received a prestigious United Nations Environment Programme Ozone Award for research on protecting the Earth's fragile ozone layer. Most recently, The Franklin Institute recognized his contributions to the understanding of greenhouse gases and ozone depletion and his research in biochemistry by selecting Cicerone as the 1999 laureate for the Bower Award and Prize for Achievement in Science.
One of the richest and most prestigious American awards in science, the Bower also recognizes his public policy leadership in protecting the global environment.

Cicerone is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Philosophical Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He also has served on the Council of the National Academy of Sciences and is a fellow of the California Council on Science and Technology.

Sorry folks. Like it or not we lost the debate regarding whether global warming exists. The average person believes it to be so.

The problem with the existing terms of debate for both conservatives and liberals is we always missed the logical fallacy that the environuts were passing off. Namely that the Globe is warming THEREFORE we must sign Kyoto treaty.

Bush's approach on this put the debate against signing the treaty on much better footing that the old construct. It basically says OK so if global warming is caused by the minor amounts of man's actions what possible changes can man make (given that we have hundred years of carbon release) that would reverse the trend ? Its impossible to prove even with logical fallacies that anything will reverse the trend short of a complete ban on all releases.

But we must do something cry the environuts. Yes, Bush says we will study on how best to adapt to the coming changes. And oh yes, we conservatives will need to employ you scientists who have formerly worked for the environuts to come up with recommendations as to how best to adapt.

Bush has accepted that we lost the first argument but has retreated to a firmer place and at the same time has opened the opportunity to hire away the paid scientific shills.

Where is God in his proclamation that the earth is in peril?? Who created this universe,AL GORE and the liberal wackoes or God, who has in His divine wisdom, protected it since He created it????HMMMMM

Here in the wine country, the official temp is at the airport. There ain't a tree for miles, and then not much grass if any in the mile around the thermometer. Our city is 7.5 miles from the airport and the airport temp is several degrees higher during the heat of the day higher than our down town temp. Even that is in the area of court houses and concrete side walks. So that temp is higher than most temps.

We live in the age of bad science. Most of it when it comes to so called enviral stuff has been advanced by Club Sierra and its little minions to seize control of our energy production and life styles while pocketing a ton of money from these controls.

When the NY Slimes comes out with the oped that they came out with. The rest of the Rat media jumps on it to make the miss leading oped appear to be news. This has been done for over 50 years and maybe longer.

You can count on the talking head news readers this week going with this non story,of course the screaming heads will be screaming about it, this weekend.

This will have no more effect than trying to blame GW for 9/11 or trying to blame Mueller who was sworn in on 9/04/2001 for 9/11.

The Rat/Socialist/communist/enviral whackos will get energized but so what. They don't vote for our side. They would not have voted for Simon, and they will not.

Also, this gives the rat mediots a chance to bury the Davis Bribe stories and use this a diversion. So it is up to us to keep finding the real news and getting it out.

VRWC minion, thanks for reposting this great insight of yours to what has been done. You posted:

I would replace the word debate as there has been no real debate due to the media with "Perception". In politics and much of life, "Perception" is reality.

So here with just minor editing is your first para:

Sorry folks. Like it or not we lost the "perception" regarding whether global warming exists. The average person believes it to be so.

This is incredible and off course hidden by the enviral whacko mediots:

Just point out to the global warming enthusiasts that a complete ancient whale skeleton was recently found in the middle of what is now the suburbia of Orange County, California -- humans weren't around back then to cause that rise in sea level!

So when did GW know about this. That does it! I will not vote for him because he knew about this before I did.
