County ERF Bans Smoking; Some Smokers Fume
By Heidi Rauch-Webb /Oswego Daily News

The Oswego County Energy Recovery Facility has gone the way of airlines, hospitals and most shopping malls in the country: no smoking in their facility.

Deputy Superintendent Frank Visser said that though only about 10 out of 30 employees at the ERF are smokers, the issue was a serious one.

"Our lunch room was also our smoking room and it's very small," he explained. "People who don't smoke couldn't get away from the smoke."

Visser said that there had been some complaints to the health department and a few weeks ago Michael Rosen, Deputy Health Commissioner, and an assistant visited the facility and came to the conclusion that controlling the smokers was not feasible so they designated the building as non-smoking.

"The new policy is that people who want to smoke must do so 20 feet from the building," Visser said.

There were some disgruntled employees but Visser told the assembled County Department of Public Works committee last week that some of the smokers have no one to blame but themselves.

"Some smokers were smoking in non-designated areas," he said. "I told them that it takes only one person to ruin it for the rest of the employees."

Visser said the decision is final after the recommendation went to the county Legislature's Health committee.

"It's a done deal," he told DPW committee members as they offered suggestions on how to correct the problem. "As a smoker, you have no rights. If I smoked, I guess I'd just quit."

Cigarettes stink.

Smoking kills the sense of smell. Smokers have no idea how strong it smells and how much it stinks. Most smokers think nonsmokers are just being picky.

Cigarettes stink.

Your opinion.
My own personal opinion, there are some brands of tobacco that are strong smelling, there are some that smell just fine.
It's all in the eye of the beholder.
BTW, there IS a BIG difference in cigarettes made from nothing but tobacco and paper and store bought cigarettes.

But back on point, the issue here was the town banning of the smokers from the lunch room as well as 20 feet from the building. If you agree that the smoke stinks and is offensive to non-smokers then you must agree with the towns actions.

You really do crack me up. Of course, smokers realize that the smell lingers in fabrics and such. Why do you think we use cleaners -- and the washing machine?

But back on point: you have a terrible memory. I don't claim to know what every non-smoker thinks, and I specifically said that I was not talking about that particular town's actions. I said that I was writing in general terms. That hasn't changed.

And it was government intervention that brought that about....early 1960's....they forced the tobacco companies to use the less potent (smellier, cheaper) tobacco in ciggarettes. Better smelling stuff is now shipped overseas. No telling what latest round of intervention will bring about in future?

Your entire post had me in stitches! I may have to print it out so I can have something to give me a good laugh when I'm having a bad day.

You made very little sense when this conversation began. You just lost the rest of it!

If your "points" were worth debating, I'd debate them, but I'm laughing too hard!! Your intense personal bias will be your destruction. (Yeah yeah, my smoking will be mine -- but at least I will have enjoyed it!!)

in the meantime give a smoker a hug every day

I'd rather do a manaj-a-twa with Hillary and Janet Reno. Speaking of the Hilldabest, I hear she smokes. Rumor or truth?

Your analogy doesn't even rise to the level of "pathetically specious."

I smoked a pack a day for 10 years before quitting 25 years ago. The most pleasant aspect of quitting is the reawakening of the senses of taste and smell which are zapped by smoking. Smokers have no way of knowing how utterly vile and disgusting the smell of new or old cigarrette smoke is to many if not most non-smokers. I could give a rats ass whether or not SHS is harmful healthwise. It simply bothers the hell out of me like it does a growing number of people who have had enough of it. The city where I live banned smoking from office buildings. The sports complexes including the Ballpark in Arlington banned smoking. I say hoorah and I'm glad that for once, I'm in the majority on some issue. Tyranny of the majority? You betcha.

"As a smoker, you have no rights. If I smoked, I guess I'd just quit." And that is exactly what the antis want everyone to think.

Apparently he is correct. The smoker had no rights.

Great dissertation. Your right, we need to take this seriously and fight back.

Thank you, purereason. I'm glad you can see how this affects everyone's rights! This is a great thread, isn't it?! I haven't laughed so hard in ages! I can just see our little NicoNazis jumping up and down, fists clenched, their little red faces scrunched up in anger. . . .

"Esther! Esther honey -- I'm comin' to be with ya!"

Hilarious!!

Cigarettes are addictive. I am an addict. Under the provisions of the ADA I demand I be accommodated.

You had better read the ADA provisions voicing your demands.

Be careful what you wish for Flyer, do you really want majority rule? 75% of us don't smoke and yes many of us will vote for a ban on smoking!

I stayed in an Inn a few weeks ago that charged a $300 cleaning fee to anyone that smoked in a non-smoking room.

Psssssssstttttttt -- I worked as a front desk manager in three major hotels. Upscale. They took the cleaning fee; they didn't do anything special to "clean" the room! I promise you, they didn't!!

"It simply bothers the hell out of me like it does a growing number of people who have had enough of it."

Sounds like someone who dearly misses it to me.

They've banned it in the ball park here to but I really don't care. Spent little time there before, now spend none...Hope you are just as glad to pay the higher prices that will result from this tyranny.

Manners are frequently legislated when people don't voluntarily observe them.

Unbelievable!

So what would you suggest for a jail sentence for not saying "Please" or "Thank you?"

Is there any area where you think that a law wouldn't be an improvement?

How about the name of that hotel? Don't want to make the mistake of staying there.
