Terrain. About 50% of the California / Mexico border is almost impassable by foot. How would you get he people and equipment down in those canyons to build a wall. And believe me, they will destroy that wall if it is not guarded 24/7.
I'm not recommending that the border patrol or the military join hands and form a human chain at the top of the walls. With electronic surveillance, it's not going to take 200,000 troops to stop women pole-vaulters that are 9 months pregnant.
We have millions of sensors along the border now, but not the man power to respond to them all. Pregnant women make up a very very small majority of the illegals that cross from Mexico.
I'm all for fining and jailing anyone that employs illegal aliens, but how does that stop the terrorists, the Red Mafia, the Yakuza and agents of adversary foreign governments?
So far there is no evidence that terrorists, the Red Mafia, the Yakuza and agents of adversary foreign governments have crossed the border through Mexico. While it is possible that these folks can cross the border from Mexico, it is more likely that they will just get a real or counterfeit visa and enter the country at a port of entry.
Mexico has the natural resources to develope it's own economy.
True, but they do not know how to properly exploit them. We would be better off spending our money getting them out of the third world and into our world. Mexico accounts for over 60% of all illegal traffic across the southern border. If we get them going and they stop coming here, then we only have to deal with the remaining 40%.
I'm not an expert in economies, but we need to unf**k that country. The US needs to go down there to Mexico City and give Fox and ultimatum. Unf**k your house or we will do it for you.
After spending 12 years in the Marine Corps infantry, I'm not ready to send troops to the border. I know what will happen and we don't need that. There are better ways to deal with the problem.
No surprise here. They were basically asking Hispanics if they would like to continue seeing large numbers of Hispanics enter the U.S. each year. I wonder what their response would have been if they had been asked if they were in favor of the U.S. allowing millions of Chinese to immigrate here each year for the next 10 years or so, and at the same time have the U.S. cut way back on immigration from Mexico.
I wonder if you could expand on this a bit? I have no idea what would happen, and your insights on other points cause me to want your views on this issue as well.

Putting a bunch of young high strung Marines and Soldiers on the border is a recipe for disaster.
Combat troops should not train or practice to be police officers. They are combat troops and should train as such and practice as such.
If troops are needed to augment the Border Patrol, them take the MP's, at least they have been through a law enforcement training academy and would understand the mission.
While not the perfect solution, a wall would work. Walls and fences have worked to secure perimeters since man has walked the earth. Take a look at any auto plant. It has a fenced perimeter with a few guards monitoring television cameras. If General Motors thought it was cheaper to surround their plants with guards than with fences, they would do it.
I read that the costs to install 400 baggage scanners in the nation's airports will cost the airports $40 billion, not the $4 billion originally estimated. For that kind of money, we could build the greatest security walls in history on BOTH the north and south borders of the United States.

The laws are already on the books in Title 8, Chapter 12 USC. Use the search engine to find anything you want.
The problem is that Bush and his administration is not enforcing our laws that they are sworn to uphold. If you want to do what you suggested 42, you have to go to the core of the problem. BUSH!!
All Bush has to do is pick up the phone and order DoJ and INS to start enforcing our laws. Thats all. No special legislation needed or nothing. Just enforce our laws.
It will be a cold day in hell when Bush enforces US law to protect Americans from illegal Mexicans.
Where do I obtain an absentee ballot? I figure if non-citizens can vote in the national elections then a non-Californian should be able to vote in that state's elections. Right? ;-)

This administration has done practically nothing to protect our homeland after 9-11. It is disgraceful.
Nearly every day we hear of a new potential terrorist threat. Our borders are wide open leaving the opportunity for any type of questionable characters to enter our country. If that's not enough, President Bush wants to give amnesty to the ones that are here illegally.
Not to worry though, in the interest of protecting us from ourselves the nanny-state government will be working hard to 'crack down' on us. Why? To make sure we are wearing our seatbelts. I suppose it will be easier to identify our bodies if we're still strapped in our cars once the bombs go off. Where are our priorities?

Yeah and it's pretty obvious they didn't so such a good job before 9-11 either. Everyone know we were going to be attacked. Yet they let 15 to 18 million illegals roam around America like it is no big deal.
To them American lives mean nothing. It is more important for them to place watering stations and beacons in the desert to save illegal Mexicans.
Anyone that votes for Bush in 2004 deserves what they get.
