Five days before Sept. 11, National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice was warned that a terrorist attack inside the United States was imminent, a former U.S. Senator who headed up a blue ribbon commission on terrorism revealed late Tuesday.
"I've known the national security advisor, Professor Rice, for about 20 some years," former Colorado Sen. Gary Hart told WABC Radio's John Batchelor and Paul Alexander. "She was a supporter of mine in my first presidential campaign as a graduate student in Denver."
After giving a speech on the terrorist threat in Montreal on Sept. 5, Hart said he requested an urgent meeting with Dr. Rice in Washington.
"I said to her, 'You must move more quickly on homeland security. An attack is going to happen.'
"That was Sept. 6, 2001," Hart told WABC, without characterizing Dr. Rice's reaction.
The night before, Hart said, he issued the same warning to an air transportation group in Canada.
Three years ago Hart and former New Hampshire Sen. Warren Rudman co-chaired the U.S. Commission on National Security for the 21st Century, which warned specifically of a domestic terrorist attack.
In a Sept. 15, 1999 report the Hart-Rudman Commission concluded, "America will be attacked by terrorists using weapons of mass destruction and Americans will lose their lives on American soil, possibly in large numbers."

Looks like Hart has been drinking. The name homeland security wasn't even thought of before Sept. 11. How would he know it needed to be acted upon more quickly if such things didn't exist?

Uh huh. And who was President back in 1999??? So, even though this report was presented in 1999, it is now Condie's responsibility to act on it a full year after it was given? More pissing into the wind, I'm afraid. If Condie knew on Sept. 6th that an attack was imminet, then so did everyone else from 1998 on.

I wonder if Hart was the source of the warning to "not fly" that was given to
San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown.
(IIRC, Willie got that warning a day or so before 9-11; but I don't think the source
was named in the newspaper report I saw.)
As for Gary Hart, it's a sad thing if he was actually way ahead of the curve on
terrorist threats. If he hadn't do some of his stupid things that made him look the fool,
maybe he could have gotten his message across.

'You must move more quickly on homeland security. An attack is going to happen.' Well, that was specific.

'homeland security'? Did anyone seriously USE that term pre 9/11? I think Hart is either dreaming, or on drugs!

oh, you're kidding, aren't you?? LOL...Is Warren Beatty in on this as well?

So what did Miss Cleo know and when did she know it?? *sarcasm off*
This whole thing is just nuts. The warnings were to vague and how much can you do in just a few days without knowing how, why, who, where, when? The only thing that they knew for sure is something big was going to happen at some point, but, not how, when, where, ect. We've already had several warnings since 9/11 and nothing happened.

Did any reporters follow him around on Sept. 11?
To: Carl/NewsMax
Duh. We were already attacked numerous times.

Gary Hart's pathetic attempt to gain back some "standing"? Wonder how many more Dem's are going to suddenly remember that they "knew" about Sept. 11th?

I do not have this a fact but I believe that it was known & Rice plus others dropprd the ball. The biggest givaway to me was the look on her face when she made a statement concerning this. Guilt was all over it. I can spot it like grass stains on a new pair of white pants. She should resign but those odds are higher than a winning lotto ticket.

'homeland security'? Did anyone seriously USE that term pre 9/11? I believe there was a homeland defense office at the pentagon.

This was a very irresponsible headline, implying that Rice was given serious, confirmed, particular information, when all she received was the 2-cent version of a speech Hart has been giving (rightly, it turns out) ever since he served on that terror-assessment commission many, many moons ago. Hart had no more knowledge that the WTC would come down Sept. 11 than did anyone else. "Imminent" as in "better get going on this, the historical/political trend is pretty urgent." Well, duh. Newsmax should have done better by Dr. Rice.
To: Digger
I wonder how many Dems she has supported in the past. Her & Colin Powell & Mineta & the ex gov of Penn whos name escapes me sure make for a sad cabinet. I forgot O'Neil whos in Africa with another fruitcake.

America will be involved soon in an armed conflict in a country other than Afghanistan. We had better start building up our military now.
There, you heard it here first. Can I meet with Dr. Rice now?
To: operation clinton cleanup
'homeland defense' and 'homeland security' aren't the same thing yet Hart specifically called it 'homeland security'. Apparently before anyone else began using that term...
To: Digger
Uh huh. Here's a clue for you: you don't know a darn thing and you are simply attacking Condi Rice because you think she should have ESP about an exact attack based on the word of a failed democrat presidential candidate.
My prediction: there is already a dirty bomb or nuke here in this country, and they are trying to find it before they launch on Iraq.
Alert the media and evacuate all airports, train stations, stadiums, shopping centers, government buildings and schools.
What, you say we can't do that based on my information? Why not? It is a logical supposition!
Feh!

I'm sorry, but isn't the descriptive phrase..."during the Clinton Administration" Missing from those two sentences..?

Carl, you've hurt your credibility with me by your headline selection. She wasn't "Warned" of anything specific acording to your own article. Hart, a former Senator, with past service three years prior on a terrorism study task force made a general comment as to readyness it appears and is patting his own back. Get real.
