Women pass over dumb men

May 28 2002

Women may be responsible for the intelligence of the human race because they consistently pick brain over brawn when choosing a mate.

A study by German geneticists supports the controversial theory that women approach brains as a sexual ornament - much like a lion's mane or a peacock's tail - according to a report published in New Scientist magazine.

The theory that women are responsible for intelligence is not new. Darwin came up with the idea that sexual selection influences evolution, and US researchers suggested 30 years ago that intelligence genes were concentrated on the X chromosome.

The X chromosome is what distinguishes men from women. It is present in both sexes but women have two X chromosomes while men have one X and one Y.

The fact that men have only one copy of every gene on the X chromosome influences whether particular genetic traits - such as intelligence - are expressed.

This in turn affects whether certain traits drift out of the gene pool or are passed on through sexual selection.

The Germans looked at genes that caused mental disability when mutated, arguing that in their normal state, these genes would contribute to intelligence.

Using a catalogue of genes and genetic disorders, the team found X contained 21 per cent of the mental retardation genes.

An Australian sex chromosome expert, Jennifer Marshall Graves, of the Australian National University in Canberra, said the study was significant.

"They have demonstrated that the preponderance of mental retardation genes on the X chromosome is real," she told New Scientist.

A lot of second marriages are the result of looking for a smart guy.

One of my little dreams in life is to get rich so that this very thing would happen. Then, when she *really* wants to get together with me, I can tell her where to stick it.

I swear, I get a happy little thrill every time I think about it. It gives me something to strive for in life.

"Dumb, rich and handsome. Very few women can turn that combo down." Not only CAN I turn that combo down, I DID turn that combo down. I was very much in love too; but even through the romantic fog I knew he would be a disaster to marry. Now, "Decent, honorable, kind, rich and handsome"...that I wouldn't turn down. Cali

No it doesn't ; however, no one wants to have to look at someone who looks disgustingly horrid. Beaty is in the eye othe beholder and most women really don't go for " looks " per se. Most men do !

Sounds to me, dear, as though you could use some dating lessons, though. : - )

The fact is that it does not matter. The luckiest people alive marry their best friend. It took me 3 tries to find that out and I am on my 30th anniversary with my best fishing buddy, poker buddy and the greatest gal that ever lived. We fight like cats and dogs and are complete opposites in every darn thing except that we really LIKE each other.

Perhaps not, but I'm not a loser. I am well respected in my profession among my peer group, and make enough that my wife can stay at home and raise the two children in our care. Our total debt wouldn't buy a new pickup truck.

However, I have observed many folks with money. Some work hard, some are intelligent, many are little better than twits who have good people working for them, keeping their own jobs safe by covering the owner's butt.

No sour grapes here, I am happy with my situation.

I have a family member who is very impressed with his own intelligence.

When he married his first wife, he told everyone he had finally met a woman who was as intelligent as he was. She split within 6 months.

Then some years later he found another woman who was intelligent enough, and in no time she was gone too. He is a bit of a monster even if he is a family member.

LOL. My wife was a cosmetics buyer for Macys in New YAWK. She lived in a loft with an "artist" when we met and this ol' boy stole her heart and 4 kids and 30 years later she say's "Y'all with the best of them.

Hi Texasforever - I am really happy that you married your best friend. That's what it's all about, finding someone to love. Maybe you can encourage the angry-sounding guys on this board with some advice. Cali

Well, I have said many times that intelligence in a man is one of my biggest turn ons. I don't have much use for an idiot in a pretty package, even if he has a lot of money.

That said, consider the women that choose the dumb men who may or may not be attractive or the one is who is just looking for money and security, which granted, is important to women. That is natural. I would suggest that it reflects on the intelligence of the woman. I mean, just look at some of these women. A lot of them came out of the shallow end of the gene pool themselves. An intelligent woman, on the other hand, is much more likely to see that an intelligent man will find a way to make her secure, whether it is immediately apparent or not and will also be able to make himself attractive to her because of who he is and NOT just because of what he looks like.

I am not one to give advice. I am a miserable person to live with and I had to learn that I was not right 100% of the time. Actually, that is all it took. LOL

I think part of the problem is that everything in society has become sexualized, and men are constantly bombarded with images of beautiful, sexy women in commercials, movies, TV shows, billboards, etc. Even the news anchors at CNN now seem to be these sexy women wearing low necklines and have that come hither look.

As a result, too many men feel deprived if they can't find a woman like the unrealistic images they see everywhere. And then real-life women feel like they can never measure up. It's sad.

LOL ... no wonder we get along so well, my friend. I'm originally from New York too . I don't say " y'all " though. : - )

Thirty-five years and one child later, my husband and I are happily wed. It's the " best friend " thing and shared interests !

I don't claim that men don't care about looks at all, only that it's at LEAST equal on both sides of the fence, if not worse for the men. I have years of empirical evidence from my own life showing that women care immensely about looks.

Also, as another example, you can look through any magazine's personal ads section and see plenty of ads from men seeking "big beautiful women," but zero such ads from women seeking such men.

Sounds to me, dear, as though you could use some dating lessons, though. : - )

I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a joke or an insult. But what good are "lessons" (do they even exist?) when the women won't talk to you in the first place?

Not really . Many scions of wealthy famlies, those with good connectionss, and keep the wealth or increase it, are also intelligent. They have social graces, went to the best schools, and aren't dumb / thieves / immoral / or whatever else you claim. There are idiots and bad apples in all social strata . The wealthy don't all get there by trickery , underhandness, and theft. Marxist cant ( or are you just jealous ? ) doesn't belong on FR !

I am neither jealous, nor is this Marxist cant. (Sheesh!)

My comments are based on observation. You leave out the third-generation rich kid who fritters away the family fortune. The qualifier was wealthy, not respectable.

The Cocaine Cartels are composed of families who are wealthy, commonly gracious people who are ruthlessly unscrupulous.

To which "best schools" do you refer? Stanford? Harvard? The Ivy League? The bulwarks of modern liberalism? 'Nuff said.

Please note I did not accuse all rich people of being unscrupulous, nor did I say they were all drooling slackjawed inbred nosepickers from the shallow end of the gene pool.

There are many wealthy people who have earned their wealth through intelligent, honest work. And many others who have not. Michael Milken (sp?), Kenneth Lay, just to name a couple of conspicuous examples. Besides, scions of multigenerational wealthy families, who increase and further the family's holdings, and who went to all the best schools, etc., aren't going to be shopping for a bride in the general population, anyway. Mother would be mortified at her son marrying a commoner.
