DAVIS SEES AUTO EMISSIONS BILL AS POTENTIAL CAMPAIGN CASH
SACRAMENTO - For those who may have missed it, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Friday that while meeting with a group of "environmental entrepreneurs," Governor Davis was asked whether he supported Assembly Bill 1058, liberal Assemblywoman Fran Pavley's social-engineering legislation that would place new restrictions on auto tailpipe emissions and unfairly restrict California consumers.
Last week Bill Simon, while voicing his opposition to the bill, also called on the governor to make his position clear.
Davis' response was classic Clintonian - "I'm committed to do the best we can do to get that bill on my desk" - coyly skipping over the key info tidbit of whether he would sign or veto the legislation. In fact, our sources tell us that the governor's press staff called reporters repeatedly to ensure that the governor's equivocation be reported accurately - wanting the bill on his desk, but not announcing a position on the bill.
But we at The Insider, having watched Gov. Davis' actions with keen interest for some time, realize the governor was in fact being completely honest in his response: Gray Davis is committed to getting that bill to his desk.
After all, if you look at interest groups lining up on both sides of this legislation (mostly against), you can see there is a lot of potential campaign contributions just waiting to be snapped up. And we all know where there is a campaign contribution, there is a Gray Davis who - according to his own chief political advisor - will spend 12 hours a day trying to get it.
Chief Davis Political Advisor Gary South, testified under oath: "(Davis) was heavily involved in our attempt to try to raise money. And as I described a few minutes ago, in some cases that could amount to 12-hour days in the office on the phone."
Whether Davis signs or vetoes the bill probably won't be decided until after all of the bank deposits are made.
Davis is for sale to the highest bidder.
That's a pretty tall order.
>>>>AB 1058, which is supported by Sierra Club, provides a reasonable approach to reducing the effects of global warming. This innovative piece of legislation would require the California Air and Resources Board to adopt regulations by January 1, 2005 that achieve the maximum feasible, cost-effective, and technologically achievable reductions of greenhouse gas pollution from passenger vehicles.
In addition, AB 1058 would give automobile manufacturers, to the maximum extent feasible, the flexibility to decide how to meet the requirements of the regulation. AB 1058 will also help reduce dependence on oil and mitigate energy price shocks in California because nearly all of the methods the automobile industry is likely to use to meet the greenhouse gas standards will decrease the state's demand for petroleum-based fuels. This reduction will result in lower fuel prices and increased savings for consumers and businesses dependent on affordable fuels.(bold emphasis mine)
Wow. The ignorance is breathtaking. Looks like the greenies were too busy with their cultural awareness courses and self-esteem lectures to have the time for economics.
As demand for gasoline drops, after inventories are depleted the price will go UP as gas stations, delivery trucks and small refiners are forced to go out of business. Less demand, less competition.
Two cents .02 per mile driven, if you drive 20,000 miles per year this will cost you $400 per year.
Fifty cents per gallon increase in gas tax. this will cost you $500 per year.
$3500 surcharge on SUVs, light trucks. and sports cars.
Reduce the speed limit to 55mph, priceless on you nerves when you have to drive 75/80 miles per day to work.
I dont know where these politicos live but they are completely out of touch with the average woarker in Ca.. If you are young and can only afford a home in the Inland Empire or the Valencia/Newhall are you are screwed. The above cost will double or maybe more.
At this point, can we all just come out and call Davis for what he is, a political prostitute?
Now just a darn minute. He's a working man just trying to earn a buck the best way he knows how.
