Pulled this little 'ditty' off a Sierra Club site.
>>>>AB 1058, which is supported by Sierra Club, provides a reasonable approach to reducing the effects of global warming. This innovative piece of legislation would require the California Air and Resources Board to adopt regulations by January 1, 2005 that achieve the maximum feasible, cost-effective, and technologically achievable reductions of greenhouse gas pollution from passenger vehicles.
In addition, AB 1058 would give automobile manufacturers, to the maximum extent feasible, the flexibility to decide how to meet the requirements of the regulation. AB 1058 will also help reduce dependence on oil and mitigate energy price shocks in California because nearly all of the methods the automobile industry is likely to use to meet the greenhouse gas standards will decrease the state's demand for petroleum-based fuels. This reduction will result in lower fuel prices and increased savings for consumers and businesses dependent on affordable fuels.(bold emphasis mine)

It's a wonder to me how people like Gray Davis manage to avoid prison.
To: ElkGroveDan
Did you see Davis on 60 Minutes last night? They did a segment on the three strikes law and how it puts people in prison for life for shoplifting and the like. Croft interviewed Davis as a supporter of the law. It was so obvious he supports it because of some poll and for no other reason, plus there's no way for him to collect campaign cash by opposing it.

The original bill AB1058:
Two cents .02 per mile driven, if you drive 20,000 miles per year this will cost you $400 per year.
Fifty cents per gallon increase in gas tax. this will cost you $500 per year.
$3500 surcharge on SUVs, light trucks. and sports cars.
Reduce the speed limit to 55mph, priceless on you nerves when you have to drive 75/80 miles per day to work.
I dont know where these politicos live but they are completely out of touch with the average woarker in Ca.. If you are young and can only afford a home in the Inland Empire or the Valencia/Newhall are you are screwed. The above cost will double or maybe more.

Whether Davis signs or vetoes the bill probably won't be decided until after all of the bank deposits are madeAt this point, can we all just come out and call Davis for what he is, a political prostitute?

But we at The Insider, having watched Gov. Davis' actions with keen interest for some time, realize the governor was in fact being completely honest in his response: Gray Davis is committed to getting that bill to his desk.He needs it there to put the press on his loyal contributors!
Thanks for this good article on how the Esteemed Governor raises millions!
It's ugly!
To: ElkGroveDan
Well, the statement is clearly meant to imply that he supports the bill (since otherwise why would he want it on his desk?), while not actually saying he does.
So if he reverses his position (as I fully expect him to), I would think of that as a prima facie case that he is in fact taking "campaign contribution" bribes.
We're not in a very good position here, since I think all of us think this bill would be horrible for the state. So when he vetoes it, we will all breathe a sigh of relief and thank our favourite diety that he's corrupt. Because otherwise he would have signed.

Davis has lunch with his grandmother, sees it as a source of potential campaign cash.
