Anyone who has negotiated a business contract (as I have) with people of this culture can validate that they lie.
The senior negotiator will lie to your face, when he knows he is lying, his underlings know he is lying and they know that you know he is lying. This is how they negotiate so as to get what they want. Only until such time that you refuse to grant any further concessions will the deal be done.
It should be noted, that one of his underlings will also confirm the lie to you in private (during a break in discussions). Usually to indicate that they do want to continue, in spite of the rigid position taken by the lead negotiator.
And after all is said and done, you will be hosted to a very gracious dinner and all is to be forgiven.
