Thanks for posting this. It's another reason I can't wait to move out of NJ.

The first column is more important than the second. CT is first in the second because we pay more federal taxes, because the average income is higher and thus there's some bracket creep going on. Moving isn't going to help you necessarily. But the first column shows which states tax the most.

Well, with our Red Chinese governor, a socialist democrat if there ever was one, who just introduced a new $20 billion transportation plan over the next 8 years, we are now #2. Next year I am sure we will vault to #1. Washington state sucks. I cannot wait till my wife retires from her job in 5 years and we can move to Wyoming. Home of VP Dick Cheney.

Wisconsin is one of the highest taxed, yet I'm at a loss as what to show for it. Well, they DO bus the inner city folk out of Milwaukee to jobs in outlying underpaying communnities. One would think with all this revenue that they wouldn't have to have closed down the waysides (with restrooms) along public highways. Nothing else says "Welcome To Wisconsin" like closed public waysides along the highways!

All-right Oklahoma! 2nd lowest overall tax burden to Alaska. Hopefully we could improve on that in the future. There's been talk of eliminating the state income tax for a sales tax.

Okay, I don't want to hear any more crap about Massachusetts from my fellow Freepers. We rank 39 out of 50. Who'd have thought it? Of course, this may be due in part to having a Republican governor for the past 10 years - RINO's all, but at least they are a tad better than the tax-and-spend Democrats of the Dukakis era.

Why would Federal taxes be different from State to State?

Also, I'd like to see the budget deficit of each State. I'd bet the States with high tax rates are in no better shape than lower tax States.

It would be interesting to see this table with columns showing which party controls the governor and legislature in each state!

Due to budget shortfalls and the corresponding increases in state income (and probably personal property) tax, expect Nebraska to rise quickly in these rankings.

We need a great big tax revolt. When I think about the trillions wasted on third world countries for the last 40 years, on welfare, on a million lame grants. ugh

Great post--thank you. Interesting how Hawaii (my state) is ranked #4 for state/local tax burden but #30 for total tax burden. Wondering what causes the huge drop. Population? Average income?
