The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday denied a request from the state of North Carolina to block enforcement of an order invalidating new legislative districts.

The denial came from Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist.

Lawyers for the state had asked the nation's highest court two weeks ago to issue an emergency stay on the state Supreme Court order, which threw out the new maps and ordered the Legislature to devise new ones for this year's elections.

If the legislature doesnt start redrawing maps today, they will have spent an entire week in special session, the purpose of which is to redraw maps, with out spending a single minute on redrawing maps!

They have until Noon Monday or the judge draws the map.

Oh, and take a look at #8.

I suppose it would help if I'd actually read the story. I was initially under the impression that SCOTUS was trying to tell the state how to redistrict itself, but it was in fact refusing to get involved. Guess that'll teach me to jump to conclusions.

Our senator (Aaron Plyler, D) is losing his seat because the people in his home county will not vote for him. I read that in the paper today. Boohoohoo...

Good afternoon, my friend.

Remember when you asked about the odds of such a stay from the Supreme Court and I recited the story of then-Chief Justice Burger denying me a stay in a case by sriting in the margin, "Denied. W.E.B." and the date? Well Chief Justice Rehnquist has just done the same in this case.

Emergency stays are harder to get from the Supreme Court than a half-court shot at the buzzer that gets nothing but net. It can be done -- I've done it once. But getting a stay is rarer than hen's teeth.

I can't say I am surprised, either.
At least this means the legislators will have to work HARD for a change this weekend!

You're right on both counts.

They did whine about involving the SCOTUS in State voting issues AND they only want to play by the rules as long as they make them up and they favor them.

Too bad Weasley isn't the AG any more, perhaps he could have translated this legal fiasco into an $800 million loss to the state like his last two cases. Go Dims!!!

I feel for you North Carolinians, But we Californians get the grand prize! Our Governor -- we fondly refer to him as Gray-out Davis -- turned a $15B surplus into a $25B deficit, a $40B swing, in only THREE YEARS! An astounding event resulting from an unprecedented combination three variables: Democrat control of Congress and the Executive branches of government, Davis' incredible arrogance and stupidity, and complicity of the media, which has reported none of this accurately. If mismanagement were an Olymic event, Davis would have won ten gold medals simultaneously.

You should consider yourselves fortunate. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

The thing with our Gov. Mike Easley and the law suits he lost as AG is this, and what makes it so horrible. NC was collecting a tax on pensions and retirements that was clearly unconstitutional. The group of seniors who sued knew they had a slam dunk case and everyone told Easley he couldnt win. The seniors, to make it easy made an offer to Easley. Stop collecting the tax and do not pay us back for past taxes illegally collected and we will go away. He said no. So they sued and cleaned his clock and cleaned out the states 'rainy day fund.'
