Rep. Jim McDermott, Washington Democrat, has acknowledged leaking to the media a surreptitiously recorded phone call between Rep. John A. Boehner, Ohio Republican, and then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
A Florida couple used a scanner to eavesdrop on the December 1996 conference call in which Mr. Boehner, Mr. Gingrich and other House leaders discussed strategy involving announcement of an ethics committee finding against Mr. Gingrich.

Then it should be OK to wire McDermott's home and office.
Well, actually no. According to him, it's just OK to leak the tapes afterwards :)
Anybody think this will get the press and the live TV coverage Watergate did?
I didn't think so...
House Chairman Wants Judge Probed
My favorite line from that AP article is that "(judge) Cudahy said in August 2000 he inadvertently told an Associated Press reporter during the Democratic presidential nominating convention for Al Gore that Ray had convened a grand jury to investigate whether Clinton should be indicted for false testimony. The AP has never identified the sources for its story."
Bet that AP still hammered the independent investigator for leaking information...
Here there is a "controlling legal" authority - but the odds of McDermott seeing any sanction (e.g., a fine or even jail time) are slim and none.
Go to jail, do not pass go but go directly to jail.
And G.Gordon Liddy just happened to be in an apartment across from the Watergate in 1972 on the night of the break-in.
Remember that the left tried to go after Linda Tripp for taping some conversations she was having with Monica Lewinsky.
That said, this illegal act by a member of Congress is not protected by the First Amendment. I say get him out of office now.
Okay, so we pay somebody the $500 fine in advance and they wire his house and give us the tapes and we'll publish them in honor of our 1st Amendment rights. ;)
Actually $500 is kind of cheap when you think about it: let's do it to everyone!
