I think I can represent The Carter Center in saying that we have been overwhelmed with the dedication of the Cuban people and the government, and their research and humanitarian sharing of knowledge about better health care with the rest of the world.

It may be that Cuba is unique in having emphasized the health need as a driving force and not just how to make a profit on specific medicines developed. We have also been impressed with the range of cooperation that has been developed between Cuba and other countries on Earth. The results of preventive health care, including ...

Poor old dim Jim. He didn't know what was going on in his own country when he was president. How can we expect him to know what is going on in Cuba. Maybe they could stand to have some houses built. He could stay there and do something useful. If they have any rabbits left he could kill a few of those also.

...I'm grateful for a chance to come here at the center of this effort on behalf of Cuba.

Any questions?

Well, now that I see the whole speech, it gets more interesting. In the news reports only related is what he allegedly was told by the State Department. But the last paragraph in the full speech is quite interesting:

One of the allegations was that Cuba was providing potentially terrorist information to Libya and to Iran. The understanding I have this morning is that there is no relationship at all between Cuba and Libya in this field, and that there is a standard contract prescribed by the international community that any technology shared would be restrained from any illicit use.
So, who gave him the understanding - the Cubans "this rmorning?" Oh, the "standard contract." Wha' happened, the Cubans say, "yes, these items can be used for terrorism, but it is forbidden by a contract, the standard contract, you see." What a joke. BTW, did they share with Libya or didn't they? This passage is conflicted.

The relationship between Cuba and Iran in this respect is just in the initial stages and has not reached the point of technological development. And my hope and my presumption is that Cuba will be very intensely concentrated upon enforcing that provision that would prevent any illicit or improper use of the technology which they share.

Hold me back! He's admitting they are going to cooperate. What did Carter say "you going to sign the standard contract with Iran?" and did the Cubans reply - "don't worry, this is just in the initial stages." And why does he have the "hope and presumption" that Cuba would enforce "that provision". Why would the Iranians buy Cuba's primitive systems unless they are trying to avoid "that provision" being "enforced" by other countries? Why is his "presumption" worth anything? Why didn't the Cubans come out and say they would "enforce" it?

Carter is tricky and an apologist here. I wondered before whether there could be some anti-Castro disinfo involved. I now see the allegations are true - as Carter's very weak apologia and cover-up show. Don't think this will get reported in the press, though. Just the alleged State Dept. "briefing."

Here's some FR threads I found. Despite Jimmy's egotistical statement that the biowar allegations were something to do with himself, it's an old story:

Iran and Cuba bolster ties, strengthen anti-US solidarity (May 10, 2001)

Cuba forced to sell biotechnology to Iran (October 10, 2001)

yeah, “forced”

Castro: "Iran and Cuba, in cooperation can bring America to its knees.”(my title) (November 4, 2001)

Iran, Cuba ink MoU on scientific, research cooperation (February 24, 2002)

This sounds like vintage Soviet propoganda. Did someone write this for the idiot?

No, and thanks for pointing that out. He is working on "behalf of Cuba", as he says. He is a traitor, or at least a sell out to domestic business interests looking to obscure anything that could get in the way of opening up the market.

His statement that anyone "with evidence" can come is inane. Hasn't he heard of the Baby Milk Factory?

And didn't Castro screw him with the Marielito boat lift "refugees" - criminals? Castro is sure smarter than this dangerous dope.

Jimmy Carter is still as delusional about Communism as ever. Its just as well he's being led around in his dotage by one of the last unreconstructed Communists on earth. He never got it and he never will.

I wonder if it will dawn on Jimmy that no one considers his opinion worth listening to regarding whether or not Cuba is building a bioweapons capability? No government policy will change because of his trip; no skeptic will be convinced of Castro's innocence in this matter, and the stories of Cuba's dangerous provocations will continue to appear. Jimmy was totally taken in by the North Koreans, and has yet to admit it. Jimmy Carter has truly achieved the same dubious status that so characterizes former President Ford; total irrelevance.

What's "The Carter Center"???

I believe it's a mail drop at one of those mailbox and shipping stores where Jimmah receives his copies of playboy and Club magazines. In addition, if I'm not mistaken, for a fee they can also provide you with a respectable and instant PhD certificate in International Studies or in anything else for that matter.

Will he still be given credibility, after this? I guess so, which shows you the value of "credibility."
