Security officers have foiled an attempt to hijack an Iranian airliner.

They overpowered the man after he reportedly told crew he was carrying a bomb.

He threatened to set himself ablaze if he was prevented from entering the cockpit, the guards told the official Iranian news agency.

The suspect, who allegedly claimed to have doused himself with petrol, has been arrested.

The Russian-made Tupolev Tu-145 was on a domestic flight.

It was travelling from Kerman in southeast Iran to the capital Tehran.

He threatened to set himself ablaze if he was prevented from entering the cockpit,...

So, why did they stop him?

My cousins flew from VVO (Vladivostok) to Khabarovsk on what we think based on the description was a Tupolev. There synopsis of Soviet Era Air Travel was less than enthusiastic. It might be different now since the Sovs have gone,but like most Soviet Era Hardware,the quality control at the factory level had a lot to be desired.

How long does it take the TU-154 to get there? I mean, accounting for traffic and redlights and everything? You wouldn't want to actually fly it. {/sarcasm}

This post doesn't make any sence. It says the SECURITY GUARDS stopped him from getting into the cockpit and that he told the crew he had a bomb,plus being drenched with petro. Were the security guards on board or at the gate?? Was the plane in the air, or on the ground when the attack happened?????

Doubtfull. Would even Iran let somebody on board whilst carrying petrol?

This could be out of a Monty Python bit. H-Careful, I've doused myself in petrol! G-No you haven't. H-Yes, I have. G-No, you have'nt. H-Have to! G-Your clothes are dry, and I don't smell petrol at all! H-Well,.......... you'd have stopped me from boarding if I'd been carrying any petrol, wouldn't you? So I did it at home before leaving for the airport!

Why did the Iranians stop it?

I thought they favored this tactic?
