But it is a duty that should not be forced on the unwilling. A lot of people give Cassius Clay (aka Mohammed Ali) grief over his decision to avoid the draft. But at least he stood up, didn't run away, and accepted the prison sentence for his actions. It is a lot more honorable than what many other draft dodgers did.

Ali was the Heavy Weight Champion of the World at that time. He didn't have to worry about becoming a hardtimers "old lady." That's why the hippies ran! What do you expect cowards to do?

the mere appearance of armed pilots and passengers might have turned things aroundExactly. The one thing the loony lefty's don't want to admit to is the deterrent value of an armed citizenry. I have come to strongly agree with the idea of Peace Through Superior Firepower.
