Bangladesh ferry sinks - Most of 400 aboard feared dead

DHAKA, Bangladesh, May 4 — Most of the 400 passengers aboard a packed ferry were feared dead after it sank in a storm in southern Bangladesh, the British Broadcasting Corp. reported Saturday.

THE FERRY SANK late Friday in the southern coastal district of Chandpur, officials said, and only 15 passengers had managed to swim ashore. The ferry was traveling to Patuakhali from the capital, Dhaka, when it was struck by a storm in Chandpur. A rescue operation was under way, but details were sketchy because thunderous storms had knocked out telephone lines to the region, United News of Bangladesh reported. The storms, which have raged across the southeast Asian nation for a week, have killed at least 59 people and injured dozens more.

Horrible.
What a tragedy.
Pray for survivors, and for the victims' families.

Wasn't there another such ferry accident with heavy losses last year?

I believe so.
I cannot remember a time in my life when there was not news of some awful tragedy happening in Bangladesh.
Floods, famine, diseases, horrible accidents and devastating storms - you name it.
You gotta feel for those poor folks.

You're right - this is a country beset with tragedy, and very poor. But they're sitting on some large reserves of nat. gas that they don't want to sell or use!

We should thank our lucky stars everyday that we have the technology, up to date equipment, and regulations that prevent things like this from happening...what a tragedy.

These happen to buses and ferries in the 3rd world with troubling frequency. I wouldn't be surprised to find that the ferry was grossly overloaded, and/or very poorly maintained.

Sadly, whether by earthquake, fire, flood, or accident, it seems that life is just cheaper in the 3rd world.

Somehow, someone will blame the United States for this.

That's terible .... can nobody swim over there or did the ferry do something unusual like flip over or explode ?

I think 15 out of 400 is worse odds than the Titanic surivivors.

The lesson: don't ride on overloaded ferrys in the third world, especially in a thunderstorm. How many of these things have to sink each year before people figure that out?

Usually, the people who sink in these things don't have a choice. Hailing a taxi isn't exactly an alternative for most of the Bangladeshi poor.

Not getting on an overloaded boat in a storm is always a choice.
