Power Out Through Jacksonville

BREAKING NEWS

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A fire at a power plant at Talleyrand, along with two major transmission lines going down, has resulted in a major outage of electricity throughout the city. JEA spokesman Bruce Dugan told Channel 4 just before 5 p.m. that a fire at the Kennedy Generating Station occured simultaniously as two major transmission lines connecting Jacksonville to the power grid went out.

Dugan said that the whole city was out initially. He said about 15 percent of service has been restored, and most should be back up in two to three hours.

Jacksonville's Emergency Operations Center was activated, and is operating at a level two. Sharon Ashton of the mayor's office said the the fire department is battling fires at the generating plant and in three other places around town.

Police report traffic lights throughout the city are out, and police ask that people only call 911 for emergencies other than to report outages.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office just called in their midnight shift, and is holding the day shift over, so that the maximum amount of officers are on the street until all power is restored.

"If you don't be on the road, don't. If you don't need to be on your phone, don't," Ashton said.

Jacksonville International Airport is running on emergency power, and arriving flights are being allowed to land. Departing flights are not taking off, and there are backups in ticketing and securty. Passengers are asked to call their airlines 800 number before before heading to the airport.

Baptist Medical Center is running on emergency power. Channel 4 has been unable to reach the other hospitals.

Telephone service -- even some cellular service -- is affected. Channel 4 understands that power is out in Orange Park, northern St. Johns County and parts of Nassau County as well.

The mayor is expecting to make a statement about the situation at 6 p.m. Channel 4 plans to carry that live.

I hate to be off topic -- especially one so suited to my joint loves of tin foil speculation and terrorist clammering -- but that shower business has become instant and pretty wonderful FR folklore and I was wondering if anybody has ever seen another post from that shower girl. Wasn't her name Brytni, or something like that?

- 5:25 P.M. UDPATE
BLACKOUT
Much of Jacksonville is without power. The city and some surrounding areas were hit by a major power outage around 4:30 p.m. Bruce Dugan of the JEA told First Coast News that as of 5:00 p.m. power had been restored to about 15 percent of the city.

Dugan said there apparently was a transformer fire at the Kennedy Generating Station at Talleyrand. A JEA station near Baldwin was apparently also affected, according to Dugan. Dugan estimated it would probably take at least three hours to restore power to everyone.

Power outages have also been reported in Nassau County and Clay County. The city's Emergency Operations Center is being activated and the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is requesting that ALL officers report for work.

A little history about the shower thing-

Around the time of the Anthrax deaths, there was a report similar to this one that was made by some Freeperette, saying she heard some plane was being followed or something to that effect. It was a two or three line post or so. It went something like "OMG, I just heard this on the news, has anyone else heard about it? I need to go take a quick shower and I will check back here for more details." Or something like it.

Ever since, its been a running gag.

Might do Redneckville a little good.

Got my Taylor guitar stolen in Jacksonville. I hope the power stays out for a while.

If the lights don't come on in 15 minutes, then the terrorists have won.

I haven't seen any postings from her since. I wonder if she knows what an effect that shower comment has had...

So do I,but my power is obviously working; by the way, NAS Jax generates their own power so the base is still up.

Yes, I know. (Heck, I don't want to toot my own horn [coughs], but I was the first person in that thread to ask her how her shower went. RedBloodedAmerican got there real fast, too...)

I remember the Freeperette's name was some chic variation of Britany, but I don't remember hearing from her since. I hope we didn't frighten her away...

LOL. If that's the standard, then California governor Grayout Davis is a terrorist...
